Des Moines column notes 15 state highway patrolmen will monitor speeds near the Iowa Wisconsin game in Iowa City on Saturday. Price Administration inspectors also warn drivers to use gasoline allowances only for official use, not pleasure trips.
The Boone city council created the office of assistant police chief and called for a definite schedule of downtown police beats. The move follows criticism of the police department and asks Mayor F. W. Gance to have the chief draft the beat map for council submission.
Tommy Feirod of Chicago Illinois and John Ansley of Henrietta Texas were held on charges of passing mutilated currency. They allegedly presented paper money showing one dollar on one side and five dollars on the other at a Sheldon cafe.
President Samuel N. Stevens, war labor board arbitrator, ruling at Grimes college, orders thousands of dollars in back wages for workers at the Des Moines ordnance plant. Frederick W. Knight of United Rubber Workers Local 235 says the union contract makes the arbitrator’s decisions final and binding.
Hawaiian born Japanese woman doctor Tsutaya N Ichioka aged 37 will become house physician at Mercy hospital Monday. She and husband Dr Toshio Ichioka 57 and sister Satsuki Nakao 25 arrived Des Moines from the Rivera relocation center. Nakao a pharmacist seeks employment. the Ichiokas are Los Angeles natives and citizens.
Cpl Myrtle R Robertson T/5 of the 17th Signal Service Company is stationed at Fort Myers Virginia. Her radio work is in the Pentagon building at the WAR radio station. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray H Robertson of Wellman. She completed five weeks of basic training at Fort Des Moines and four and a half months at Keystone radio school Hollidaysburg Pa before a period at Fort Oglethorpe Ga awaiting assignment.
President Roosevelt said at a news conference that he and Winston Churchill discussed a postwar program for worldwide freedom of the air. He favored private operation of profitable routes and limited government service only on loss-making lines for distant territories. Tentative plans have been under study for months with the aim of free air and national ownership of internal aviation.
Edwin Cole and his family faced a local draft board decision on his induction. Cole, a cement finisher supporting nine children, sought deferment or an essential job with pay matching his $10 to $18 daily earnings, while offering to switch roles if needed.

Newton officials announced that the Maytag Co. received a war production citation for its management and workers in producing tank track pins. Walter Sutherland, Maytag public relations counselor, disclosed the award details.
Washington County faces a shortfall of 489194 dollars to reach its third war loan quota. Four towns exceed targets while Crawfordsville oversubscribed fourfold. Grace P. Waller of Danville Illinois assumed duties as superintendent and anaesthetist at Washington County Hospital. She arrived a day early and worked full hours after starting October 1 amid local nurse shortages. Waller brings 16 years as an anaesthetist and prior hospital executive experience.
The American Legion teams with local posts to sell cigarettes for overseas servicemen. Hap Freidel is general chairman arranging volunteers to tag sales, with proceeds aiding boys abroad. Headquarters Saturday will be at O. K. Clapper’s West Washington office, Charles Kennedy assists with Leon Beaty Post duties.
