Washington reports Major General Graves demanded an apology from Russian forces commander General Rozanoff for the flogging of Corporal Sperling and the arrest of Capt. Johns. An American detachment retrieved Sperling and took Cossacks hostage as investigations proceed into Japanese involvement at Iman and the broader Siberian incident.
Three men attempted a train hold up near Hillsboro Illinois and were halted by authorities. Two suspects were arrested in Springfield Illinois on October 1 as officers pursued the bandits after the failed robbery. Additional details and potential accomplices remained under investigation.
Six men blamed in the attempt on a fast New York Central train a mile south of Hillsboro. Thomas A.
