Veterans from the Eighth and Nineteenth Iowa Regiments gathered in the city for reunions. Local residents welcomed aging soldiers, with ceremonies and displays illustrating Civil War memories and shared service.
Washington hosts Eighth and Nineteenth Iowa regiments for a large reunion. Delegations arrive, martial band performs, and a camp fire program follows an afternoon at the Opera House. Officers recount Civil War service from Camp Lincoln to Vicksburg and Spanish Fort, with prayers and community support filling the city.
The last captain of Company J was John 8. Gray of this city. Colonel Benjamin Crabb led the regiment from Keokuk after the county sent the second company, the Seventh Iowa's Company H, to serve. They departed September 4 on the T. L. McGill to St. Louis, then Benton Barracks for two weeks, then Rolla Missouri to join Herron’s brigade formed by the Nineteenth Iowa, Twentieth Wisconsin and Forty-fourth Illinois, with Herron noted as an Iowa man, before proceeding to Springfield.
Major F R Earle once commanded the Thirty-fourth Arkansas Confederate Infantry and opposed the 19th Iowa at Prairie Grove. He later became a Presbyterian minister living in Cane Hill Arkansas. A reunion of the Nineteenth Iowa noted his speech as a surprising turn in his career.
Owing to delays in plans, bids for the Washington electric light building will open Saturday at 2 30 o clock, October 4, with City Clerk receiving bids until that date. The city may reject all bids and completion target is November 1. Johnson’s bakery advertises its goods as the best in Washington. Lost and wanted notices placed in the Journal.
