A large group departed this morning for Yeo to attend the Baptist Association meeting. Among the travelers were Rev. Fowler, Mrs. S. A. Athearn, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Smith, and Miss Baker.
Reports from Wayland Avoca and Mason City recount a burglary at John Wenger & Co. hardware store with Keith Goldsmith items stolen and a $50 reward offered. Avoca describes a red rain scare caused by juice from crushed berries. In Hancock County, would-be robbers dynamited a county treasury vault but failed to breach the burglar-proof safe.
The new L. Noble residence three miles north of Vinton burned Saturday afternoon while the family was away. Mrs. Noble was visiting Wisconsin and Mr. Noble and helpers were in the fields. Only a pillow and $150 in cash were saved. The fire likely started from the kitchen stove. Loss estimated at $5,500 with $3,000 insured in Eden Township Farmers' Mutual.
Coal miners in the Centerville district refuse longer work at current scale and plan a mass meeting tomorrow. If their demand for $1 per ton instead of 60 cents is not granted, it is expected they will quit. Fifteen hundred men are employed in the district.
Boone Iowa September 30 Miners in the Milford coal field walked out demanding one dollar per ton for future coal digging Their demand was not granted and about five hundred men joined the strike.
Geo Maden, captured in the R. I. & P. yards by Sheriff Teeter, was brought before Justice Rogers and sentenced to five days in the county jail.
A New York Sun verse laments a perpetual cycle of power and renewal. The speaker, describing himself as a constant, restless figure, notes closing the summer campaign, repairs his heart, and vows to resume power at the old stand in town. He declares winter of discontent and prefers personal ills over imagined burdens.
Mr C O Jones and Miss Ella Scales united in marriage in Mt Pleasant Saturday by Rev W P Stoddard. Jones son of N H Jones of Washington and a rising railway man at Mt Union. Scales daughter of farmer John Scales of Canaan. Friends extend best wishes for long life peace and prosperity.
Last night Clark Sitler James Laughead and others rode a single delivery wagon from the fair ground when the horse bolted. Sitler tried to hold the horse the wagon crowded it and they all jumped clear. On the square Mr Ewing's mules strayed and collided amid a frenzied mix of wagons. Some bruises and minor wagon damage reported.
The Chicago publisher F. L. Stocum seeks a twenty five day permit at seventy five dollars but city mayor McCollum refuses citing an ordinance that fixes a minimum ten dollars per day to protect home trade. Stocum questions validity of the rule and may challenge authorities.
