The coldest November day in history swept the midwest with blizzards and deep snow. Dozens faced exposure as fuel ran low, with seven deaths reported across Michigan Wisconsin Illinois Indiana and Minnesota.
George Freshwaters athletic manager at the high school announced today that the annual football banquet planned for next Monday evening has been deferred and will likely be later in the week. A feed for members of the high school and junior college gridiron squads had been proposed but could not be arranged.
The Iowa State Highway Commission will let bids next Thursday for 2,000,000 barrels of cement valued around 4 million dollars. The purchase follows trials with bulk buying to curb price rises, after 1929 purchases of about 40,000 barrels for Audubon and Boone counties. Cement to be delivered to contractors will cover paving work for hundreds of miles in the 1930 season.
A major Monticello fire destroyed a three story business building and damaged a drug store, a garage, and six houses. The Roberts building was the origin, with spread to nearby stores. Firemen were injured by exploding glass containers as Anamosa and Cascade units aided for three hours before containment.
The Pageant of the Shawls by the high school Girl Reserves is set for Friday evening in December. Roles were listed in last Saturday's paper. Commander Richard E. Byrd safely returned to Little America after a successful survey flight across the South Pole. The 800 mile journey over rugged terrain, with Brent Balchen piloting the Floyd Bennett, marks Byrd as the first to fly over the South Pole and the only to have flown over both Poles.

Mrs. Fannie Simpson aged 59 died suddenly at her home in Ainsworth after a brief illness. Her husband William Simpson was killed in an accident near Fairfield a year ago. She leaves four children Lillian Vera Laird and Charles all at home. Funeral plans are not complete.
Friends in Insworth report the death of Rev. George Filmer former pastor of the Methodist church there at age 85 on November 27 at the home of his daughter Mrs Dinsmore in Hedrick Iowa.
