P H Schertz aged 81 remained in critical condition at St Joseph hospital after a falling tree struck him. He was watching workers fell the tree when it toppled unexpectedly and caused a skull fracture.
Funeral services were held at Graettinger for Jerome Nurre an 18 month old son of Eugene Nurre who drowned in a stock tank on the Nurre farm north of Graettinger The infant was in the farmyard and had been missing about a minute when his father found the body in the tank.
A stubborn blaze tore through the Des Moines Bottling Co basement extending to the roof of the two story building. Firemen fought for two hours with six water streams as bottles and drinks on the first floor collapsed into the basement.
DES MOINES State salary warrants for James Pearson of Shenandoah, recently appointed head of a state liquor commission department of temperance education, are being held up temporarily. C. Fred Porter, state comptroller, said a warrant for three days' pay for Pearson was held up pending an opinion by Atty Gen. Fred Everett as to whether liquor commission funds may be used for such purposes.

The Polish liner ZIlsudski and the British armed merchant cruiser Rawalpindi were sunk off the English coast with heavy loss of life. Capt Mamert Stankiewicz was among the dead in the Polish sinking. 287 lives were lost on Rawalpindi. The fate of the Rawalpindi sinking location was not disclosed.
Governor George A. Wilson proclaims Thanksgiving observance in Washington with town businesses closed and public offices including the courthouse shutting down. Judge P J Siegers will not hold court on Thanksgiving day and adjournment to Monday is expected. In Detroit on November 29, the Chrysler corporation and United Automobile Workers affiliated with Thesa reached a one year contract ending a four day dispute. The pact includes a general wage increase and a modified bargaining board but no union shop. Production schedules remain under company control and a no strike clause remains unless union procedures are bypassed. Ratification by 60,000 workers is the remaining formal step. The wage increase raises payroll by about 5 million dollars annually.
The fire department was called late yesterday afternoon to the Maid-Rite sandwich shop on South Marion avenue where a chimney was burning out. There was no damage.
Mrs Cora Ruth Fields 61 widow of A J Fields was found dead in her home 228 North Fourth avenue last evening about 5 oclock. She died from gas inhalation in her kitchen stove chair with daughter in law alerting her husband county coroner said she had been dead about three hours no inquest. Funeral planned Friday 2 pm Jones funeral home with Rev J Fredmund at Baptist church burial Elm Grove cemetery. Survived by sons Nathan Fields J W Fields Mrs Paul Hunt daughters Verry and Dive Fields six grandchildren and siblings one sister one brother.

Born March 1, 1860 Northfield Minnesota moved to Keota area at age six. Married February 20 1884 to George W Stevenson who died 1922. Survived by daughters Nelle Littlefield and Mabel Morris two grandchildren Laura Lueille Littlefield Vinton Indiana Pa and Phil Morris and four sisters.
