Fairfield residents will vote December 17 on a $50,000 airport bonding plan for purchase and equipment. The election, approved after a petition with 580 signatures, also asks if the airport should be managed by an airport commission and whether a one fourth mill tax levy should finance the bonds.
Mrs Adrian Penning 21 of near Hespers was shot in the chin by an unknown assailant or stray hunter with a .22 caliber bullet. She described a rap at the door, then a shot, and, despite injuries, walked outside but saw no one flee and found no tracks. The incident was reported to Sheriff Harry Dykstra in Sioux County, Iowa.
George Marshall of LaPorte City IA suffered a fractured spine and was in critical condition after his car left the highway and crashed into a ditch five miles south of Waterloo. Kenneth Williams of LaPorte City received a fractured collarbone and was treated at the same hospital.
Mystic James Harrison Livingston 26 a recently discharged Army father pulled his brother in law Leo Seals 30 from the Chariton river. Seals slipped into the water as traps were being run and Livingston was fatally shot when his rifle butt struck the gun discharged. Livingston died ten minutes after the accident in waist deep water Seals could not save him.
In Fort Dodge Alvin Larson 19 in critical condition after a .22 rifle discharged while his 15 year old uncle Pat Fisher cleaned it. The bullet hit Alvin in the chest likely penetrating a lung. Alvin lived with grandparents Mr and Mrs William Fisher since his father served in Alaska.
Harold T. Wehr former Journal photographer and Navy photomate first class announces a new commercial photography studio in Washington. He will shoot babies weddings and outdoor scenes and copy important documents such as discharge papers and birth records with aid from his wife Mary Lynn Heilman. In Navy he was an instructor at the photography program in Pensacola Florida.
The Nuremberg tribunal approved deposition testimony from Lords Beaverbrook Kennedy Londonderry and Van Sittart for Joachim von Ribbentrops defense. They may testify in person if they wish. The court also allowed Schuschnigg to be called and rejected bringing Teidals, preferring a written statement if relevant. Franz von Papen testified on Nazi aims in southeastern Europe.
Discharged members of the armed services in Washington county show a surge in discharge papers recorded at the county recorder's office. The total reached 650, with nearly 400 detailed in the Journal listing names addresses campaigns served in length of service and awards.
A Washington county Izaak Walton league charter meeting is set for seven o clock Friday evening at the Y to boost local membership. Leaders aim for about 400 members by charter night with strong county turnout and offices to be chosen at a later session after a general county meeting.
Washington residents are asked to join a waste paper collection tomorrow afternoon. The event starts at 1 PM with volunteers meeting at the S. W. Easter office in the Nelswanger building on South Iowa Avenue. Bundles should be placed in front of homes for pickup.
Gen. Yamashita testified before a military commission that he did not order the destruction of Manila or the killing of civilians and prisoners of war. He said he shifted to a delaying action in December 1944 and that the Manila raid was conducted by troops not under his command. The Philippine supreme court had denied his habeas corpus petition challenging Gen. MacArthur's authority.

Secretary of State Byrnes said Patrick J. Hurley would have two state departments behind him if he stayed as ambassador to China. Hurley resigned amid claims that internal opposition sabotaged efforts to unify China democratically. Marshal to China as Hurley’s temporary replacement. Byrnes asserted guarantees of backing and removal of obstructive officials.
Justice of the Peace J B Ro Yee fined Gerata Nicola of Washington $25 and costs on a reckless driving charge. Nicola allegedly drove into a car driven by Mrs EK A Stewart Saturday night after Mrs Stewart obtained the license number and notified Police Chief Cari Hancher.
The city will start collecting tin cans in the southeast part of town this Saturday. Residents should place cans in receptacles for city trucks to pick up. After southeast, the southwest area will be visited to finish the tin can pickup. if any are missed notify Mr. Easter at 660.
The chamber of commerce announces two holiday events in Washington on Saturday. At 10:30 a free children's film at the State theater, provided by the chamber, will precede Santa’s 2 PM arrival at the Y where he will greet youngsters and distribute treats. Children may bring letters to drop with Santa.
Yesterday afternoon two separate crashes occurred at the West Madison street and Louis Avenue intersection. Vehicles driven by J. F. Frame of Burke and Wynne Gretter of Harper collided. both drivers reported damage to their cars.
Farmers in Washington county vote on county and township AAA committees December 3 to 7 to decide soil practices loan and insurance policies. Three regular and two alternate committeemen per township plus one delegate will be elected to form the county committee. County election Saturday morning December 8 will finalize the slate.
Early today at about 7 15 a.m. two cars driven by Eugene Chalupa and T G Lee collided at the northwest corner of the square. Both drivers sustained minor bruises and the extent of damage to the vehicles was estimated.
General George C. Marshall will be called before the Pearl Harbor investigating committee before departing for China as President Truman's diplomatic representative. The panel aims to question him about pre Pearl Harbor communications between the War Department and the Hawaiian command and the risk of war. Joseph C. Grew is recalled for further questioning and Cordell Hull is expected to testify but weather delayed him.
One car was ditched and heavily damaged while another lost a door in a crash five miles east of town on highway 92 yesterday evening. Donald Cooney of Brighton suffered a slight laceration to a leg when Willard Kroppe of Omaha struck the door as Cooney exited his vehicle. The Omaha car went into a ditch and struck a telephone pole, with about 159 dollars in damage.
First returns from four western Pennsylvania plants show CIO steel workers favor a strike for a two dollar daily wage increase. Official figures indicate a margin near one to four tenths in favor of the walkout as talks continue and a few bruises are reported.
