A wind driven blaze swept through crowded Pusan Korea turning the city into panic. The fire destroyed thousands of tar paper shanties and at least one U.S. military site injuring several and forcing mass evacuations as refugees flooded the streets. Firefighters battled low water pressure hindering suppression efforts.
Iowa's 1953 corn was the driest on record per the State Department of Agriculture. The weather bureau found average moisture content in Iowa was 13.4 percent, below 1939's 13.9 percent and far under the 10-year average of 19.1. Samples across the state ranged 12.5 to 14.3 percent, showing uniform dryness.
New York report shows Dr. Morton S. Biskind argues DDT and related chemicals cause numerous illnesses in humans and animals. He cites 119 scientific citations and notes outbreaks since 1945 including hepatitis heart and artery disorders cancer pneumonia and fatigue with both people and pets affected.

Three people died and two were badly injured in Thanksgiving Day crashes across Iowa. An icy county road near the Scott Cedar County line claimed Mrs. Marcella Harney of West Liberty. her husband Robert Harney was knocked out for hours before they found her dead at the scene. A separate incident north of Harlan fatally struck John Grubmier and Mrs. William Gaul after Grubmier stepped into the road. Tony Gaul suffered injuries. A fifth person died when a car slid from U.S. 30 near Marshalltown, sending five others to the hospital with serious injuries.
Sen Guy M Gillette will travel to the Near East next month to study the Palestine refugee problem amid Israeli Arab tensions. He will inspect refugee camps housing about 830000 people, report to the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on the Near East and Africa, and study resettlement options. The camps are run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency and US taxpayers have contributed over 150 million dollars in five years.
Rep. H Carl Andersen warns against further reductions to soil conservation payments. Rep Jamie L Whitten also opposes budget cuts to agriculture attention. Last session members helped restore 55 million of proposed 110 million cuts. Congress approved 195 million for 1954. Administration undecided on 1955 funding level.

An American Army sergeant admitted the strangulation murder of 9 year old Susan Rothschild. Maurice I Szgt Schick 29 confessed after intensive questioning and is married with two adopted Japanese children in the same housing area.
Iowa official L B Liddy said a federal tax ruling will bar the sale of dairy spread next week. The product would be treated as adulterated butter with a $600 license and a one cent per pound excise tax, making retail price about 52 cents a pound and illegal to sell in Iowa.
In Washington the Army rejected a 1406,000 man reduction for next fiscal year, saying a 10 percent cut would shrink overseas combat forces and breach commitments to Western Europe. The five hour Pentagon talks included Deputy Defense Secretary Keyes and others as Army leaders review manpower tables for possible reductions.
A 45 year old Cherokee Indian restaurant worker Harry Snarr was located in Chicago after reporting he was bitten by a rabid dog. He awaited Pasteur inoculations with a seven day window to potential survival. The bite was on the head increasing urgency.
More than 1,500 Iowa high school musicians gathered for the all state concert with a 270 member band a 250 piece orchestra and a 1 000 voice chorus Gordon Bird of Drake University directs the band Leo Kucinski of the Sioux City Symphony and municipal band leads the orchestra and Weaton Noble of Luther College directs the chorus. The event is sponsored by the Iowa High School Music Association and the Iowa Music Educators Association.
An American C119 flying boxcar crashed near a Paris cemetery while landing at Orly Airport. It disintegrated in a flame while approaching final clearance. Fire crews fought the wreckage as five bodies were recovered and one crewman reportedly bailed out safely.
Premier Joseph Laniel falls short of the 314 vote absolute majority in a confidence tally on European unity. He secures only a simple majority of ballots cast, while Bidault angrily hands in his resignation amid the debate over the presidential election date.
The State Department dismissed Moscow's new note calling for four foreign ministers talks in Berlin as disappointing. It said the proposal repeats prior Soviet positions rejected by Eisenhower and Dulles and aims to derail European Defense Community ratification and unity. London reaction differed with a British spokesman suggesting the note amounted to acceptance of earlier Allied proposals. Sioux City Council appointed City Auditor A. E. Rugg as city finance superintendent to replace resigning Clane Evans who pled guilty to accepting gratuities. Rugg will serve Nov 30 to Jan 4 and remain auditor. pay adjusted to 5250 as councilor and finance chief, with auditor pay reduced. Evans and Fletcher pleaded guilty to illegal gratuities, fined 500 each, with suspended one year terms. O Millinuk and Mark Sabel face conspiracy pleadings. Mayor Hederson says no park superintendent replacement yet.
Delmer H. Butterbaugh of Keotaway is in the custody of sheriff's officers awaiting arraignment on a bad check charge.
Col William G. Eldridge has been named chief of staff for the 44th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis Washington. He succeeds Col John F Homnfeld who is leaving active duty for the Illinois National Guard. Eldridge previously commanded the 129th Infantry Regiment and served in World War II and the Korean War. He was G-1 for the 19th Corps in the Far East and later Assistant G-1 for Army Forces Far East.
An explosion and fire wrecked the engine room of the Swift and Company poultry plant in St. Clinton. The blast tore the roof and flames were visible citywide. Firefighters fought the blaze about 30 minutes, using gas masks due to ammonia. One employee in the room escaped unharmed.
In PANMUNJOM the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission capped explainers at five to handle 351 prisoners including 22 Americans and one Briton who refused to return. Each prisoner will be allotted four minutes for explanations, risking rushed decisions and potentially all Communist-held prisoners being interviewed in one day.
A United Press tally shows 122 traffic deaths from 6 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Thursday during the Thanksgiving holiday period plus 41 miscellaneous fatalities, totaling 163. California led with 12 traffic deaths, followed by Illinois and New York with 10 each.

Near Ainsworth Irene Rich sustains face lacerations and a forehead bump in a second crash involving Dale Musser of Banning California. Damages total about 1 600 with sheriff's office investigation.
Duluth Minnesota reports 106 year old Civil War veteran Albert Woolson shown improving after bronchitis and pneumonia. Doctors say he may be discharged in about ten days as he continues to recover his strength and appetite. The survivor spoke with nurses and enjoyed a Thanksgiving meal before his illness.
A marathon bridge contest between Mr. and Mrs. Ted Batley and Mr. and Mrs. Leon Hillman concluded in a tie after 20 hands. Each couple finished with 2,410 points, marking a rare 400-match milestone.
A petition for divorce was filed by Martha Craft against John W. Schoolcraft in the district court. The court asks that the divorcee may resume her maiden name Marthe Helfrich and that the defendant pay costs of the action.
