In a five-day drive ending at a victory dinner Friday night at Black's tearoom, Waterloo workers reported cash and pledges totaling 84,802 dollars, surpassing the 84,159 dollar goal by 143 dollars.
Agnes Samuelson seeks to become president of the National Education Association in a campaign started among Iowa Teachers association members. The move follows her tenure as state superintendent of public instruction.
Gunder Johnson of New Sharon area Mahaska County turns 101 in April 1935. He still supervises his 240 acre farm, chops wood, and tends to house and outbuildings, proving the first hundred years are the hardest.
A 26 year old man from Wessington Springs, George Tapken, died after a plank driven through his car pierced the vehicle while riding along Highway 218 north of Cedar Falls. He died en route to the hospital.
William Bean 61 a cattle feeder near Wall Lake Iowa was held in the Webster City jail for Sheriff W J Stuart of Sac county who said Bean will be charged with slaying Onna Meyer 51 fatally wounded Saturday in a farmyard brawl near Wall Lake. Stuart said Bean struck Meyer with a steel pipe causing a wound that killed Meyer a few hours later.
About 175 members of the United Relief Workers of Polk County marched to the state capitol carrying placards reading We want work and We want clothing. A police escort accompanied them as three representatives submitted ten relief demands to the governor. Delegation included D. A. Judd the Rev Arona Gilmartin and Kenneth Hicks.
Des Moines Iowa relief spending doubled over the year with October 1934 costs at 1 081 580. Auditor Milton Siegel said drought relief increased caseload from 25 051 cases in October 1933 to about 140 000 people.
A giant crow as large as a hen roamed Des Moines near Union park Monday and stole a dressed chicken from Mrs. F. F. Carey’s window sill at 3102 Wright. Neighbors recovered part of the fowl from a nearby housetop and another resident reported the bird entered her home through an open door to eye food.
More than 7600 was secured for the Red Cross in Washington county through the annual roll call announced by county chairman Roger Sherman after conferring with Mrs. A. B. Atchison and Attorney Richard Stewart. Membership neared 700 with a $1 fee and a few giving more. Towns such as Crawfordsville and Riverside contributed smaller amounts, while Washington town led with about 508. Stewart noted some final reports pending from canvassers.

Twenty paintings by Mrs. Virgie Claxton will be on display with no admission at the building north of the National Bank. The Fortnightly Club Art department sponsors the exhibit, assisted by Donald Benblossom, open Wednesday 11 to 1 and Wednesday to Friday 2:30 to 5:30 and 7 to 9 p.m. The painter, a Houston artist, previously exhibited at Davenport Municipal gallery.
Federal forecast indicates colder conditions with a chance of snow in Des Moines tonight and tomorrow. Local observer reports about half an inch of rain in Washington from Sunday night into yesterday.
Brown contests the November 6 election in Washington County Iowa alleging 35 ballots in Third Ward precinct 8S counted for Foster were miscounted due to marking errors. He seeks full canvass and correction claiming these votes would have changed the result, with similar errors alleged in other precincts.

Washington D C November 27 The treasury department reorganizes the federal liquor enforcement unit after 1000 of 1400 investigators fail civil service exams. Dismissals occur Friday with 400 remaining to train new recruits nationwide.
The floor area at Biklen's store has been expanded by removing a wall ledge along the west shelving. Clerks can now stand behind the west counter, which was previously shoved against the shelving. The renovation is complete and the counters will be arranged more conveniently than before.
Mrs. I Coffey and sister Miss Ruth Haffen along with Mrs Mary Tandy from West Chester shop in the city this afternoon and plan to depart for Chicago tomorrow morning for the big show. It will be their last chance to see them before entry.
In Vienna on November 27 police in steel helmets attacked thousands of anti Czech demonstrators, mostly students, who shouted Down with Mazaryk. They smashed a Czech newspaper and attacked another owned by Jews while stones were thrown at officers. The protest followed a Prague university dispute over the charter and divisions between German and Czecho-Slovak schools.
The Burlington Rotary annual duck dinner drew about 450 Rotarians from Iowa and Illinois, with twenty five local members attending. Entertainment accompanied the program and prizes were awarded, including Dr. E. E. Stutsman winning a large box of dried fruits from the Blaul company for Washington designation.
All Washington stores will close all day Thanksgiving except groceries and meat markets. This custom has continued for many years. The Journal will issue at noon Thursday and give Journal employees a half day.
Leroy Harris a 59 year old La Salle Street broker plunged from the 21st floor of the Palmer hotel in Chicago after slashing his wrists and stabbing himself then leaping. Two friends rushed to the managers office with letters claiming intent to end his life at ten this morning. Harris was the fourth hotel window jumper in Chicago in ten days.
Rev W J Stevens announces a weekly Tuesday Bible class at the Foursquare Gospel Tabernacle in addition to the regular service. He will teach the class and says everyone is welcome.
