Incoming Iowa governor Bourke Hickenlooper weighs tax relief after review of state finances. A prepared report will guide his inaugural address to the legislature on January 12 and potential remission of part of the income tax due March 31.
A fire at Star Bottling Works in Oskaloosa on Wednesday, believed caused by a furnace blower fan, burned sugar valued at more than 504 dollars. The blaze damaged electrical equipment and the interior of a building used as salesroom, warehouse, and offices, Arnold Muhl said.
Lyman Henry Laude, 39, of Guthrie Center, Iowa, was indicted by the federal grand jury in the Southern District on charges of violating the Selective Service Act. Court officials said he would be arranged Friday morning.

Ivan Rhodes of Chicago USO met Ottumwa civic leaders to discuss establishing a USO center. A preliminary committee including Rev. J. H. Bloughe, Francis Brothers, and Ralph Ransom will recruit ten local volunteers. A regional Chicago meeting on December 8 will review the proposal, followed by a national meeting.
The Iowa Farm Bureau Federation challenged United Dairy Farmers aims in Iowa. In its labor resolutions the bureau urged labor organizations to refrain from actions that organize farmers while recognizing workers' rights to organize. The stance appeared moderating versus some speakers at the Hotel Fort Des Moines convention.
Postmaster M C DeLong reports custody of 25 pictures including a girl with a wagon and a house. Des Moines Lifetone Studios mailed 26 copies to Washington with no name or address, hoping the recipient will identify and claim the pictures as a Christmas gift. The order lacked sender details and Washington postmark prompted the notice.
Ed Hall a 63 year old railroad watchman for Northwestern Railroad was killed on the right of way in Marshalltown Wednesday while off duty. He was fatally injured when he walked around the end of three stationary coal cars on a siding and a loaded coal car was shunted into the stopped cars.
E. P. Chase reports southern non New Deal Democrats in Congress openly welcomed the strengthened Republican presence after the recent elections. They told Republican colleagues they viewed the win as wresting control from the administration.
Since returning from Iowa Senator Clyde L. Herring has attended committees and kept up office work and floor activity. He praised opponent Gov George A Wilson for victory and sportsmanship in defeat. He says people have a right to change their public servants and will retire with goodwill. Two terms as governor and six years as senator shaped ten years in fast moving public life. He did a good job and leaves with many well wishes from across the political spectrum.
A man was killed by a forceful impact that hurled him over a hall edge. he died before responders could reach him. Investigators are examining the incident and the cause remains under review.
Thanksgiving 1942 brought its coldest start to the new winter season in Washington with a 13 to 14 degree reading overnight and a yesterday high of 52. A northwest wind kept temperatures frigid through nine this morning. November alternated between warm and changeable, with light snow yesterday evening and earlier record lows of 11 to 27 degrees.
Des Moines reports a northwest storm bringing rain sleet and snow then freezing temperatures. Ice caused numerous minor accidents across the state. Seven cars piled up on a hill near Estherville with one injury reported.
President Roosevelt appoints Claude R Porter to the Interstate Commerce Commission for seven years. He also reappoints Clyde B Atchinson to a seven year term.
The United Presbyterian church hosted a union Thanksgiving service at ten with faith leaders from Washington area churches and music by the United Presbyterian choir. Rev. W J Stevens spoke on gratitude as a duty and God’s gifts, citing biblical verses and praising America’s blessings and providence. He recalled Pilgrims kneeling to pray at Plymouth Rock and praised George Washington and Benjamin Franklin for guiding the nation through challenging times.
American troops worldwide celebrated Thanksgiving with roast pork and baked ham in Britain while a non-sectarian service occurred at Westminster Abbey. On Guadalcanal, troops planned a turkey dinner if shipments arrived on time and the Japanese did not interfere.
