A Iowa Dubuque column notes five sturdy steel L boats built at the Dubuque Boat and Boiler works under a $350000 contract. The vessels will carry coast guardsmen behind mine layers to fasten mines for potential harbor defense as part of near Moscow war planning.
Lloyd Caughron, 41, of Waterloo, received a one year jail term from District Judge A B Lovejoy on a forgery charge. He had already served a year in Fort Madison on a desertion conviction after infant Zelta Lee died in the Nov 26 1938 house fire. The mother was hospitalized, and seven children were placed in the Lutheran orphanage at Waverly in 1939 with three later adopted.

Officers investigate the shooting of four cows on the S. A. Deam farm near Hampton. Three animals were found dead in the barn. the fourth was wounded. All were shot in the head with a rifle. Deam says he has a suspect in mind.
Acting on parental complaints Cedar Rapids police raided the city and seized 51 boxes of candy 1 punchboard and arrested three men. One suspect H K Ingram paid a 15 fine in police court for possessing gaming equipment.
House Republicans held a conference in Washington to pledge a strenuous fight against price control provisions that would authorize government licensing of businesses and the buying and selling of commodities. Leader Joseph W. Martin Jr. warned they would likely send the measure back to committee if the provisions remained. Leon Henderson argued licensing was essential to enforce price regulation as the Gore wage and price freeze option loomed. Martin said the Senate would not act on price control until spring.

Des Moines reports show husking of the town's corn crop rapidly nearing completion due to freezing weather last week. Federal meteorologist Charles D. Reed said that Sunday and Monday reports indicated about 2 percent of corn pushed and around 60 percent of soybeans combined.

He attributed the decline largely to parental consent withdrawals for under 21 recruits.

The Washington County Medical Society held its November meeting at the nurses home with a 6:30 dinner. Dr. D. J. Glomset of Des Moines spoke on heart disease. Sixteen society members and two visitors attended the session.
