About 75 farmers joined a county beef producers association sponsored tour in Washington County on Tuesday despite cold weather. Rancher Mayer Cleared In Murder Verdict At Trial
Walter M. Mayer the 56 year old New Mexico rancher was found not guilty of murder in the May 2 shooting of John C. Wisdom near Bloomfield. Mayer and his wife Katherine wept as jurors acquitted him after a brief trial, claiming self defense. They planned to return home to Ottumwa via train for Thanksgiving with their two sons.
