New York and Washington reports quote William G. McAdoo criticizing coal mine profits in 1917 while urging no price rise for consumers. The central competitive bituminous field faces wage proposal talks as Garfield weighs how much increases reach the public.
Washington reports President Wilson has tentatively selected R. C. Leffingwell for the treasury post left by Secretary Glass, with efforts underway to attract Bernard Baruch as secretary of commerce.
The Washington high school forms the Normal Training club to study rural school problems. Meetings will be held occasionally. Mildred Mauthe is president, Ethel Beatty vice president, and LeGore O Loughlin secretary.
High school students report 200 subscriptions secured for the annual with more to come. Campaigning continues as plans advance to publish next spring. Russell Conner leads with 61 subscriptions to date.

A Dodge touring car involved in a Sunday afternoon collision with C C Wilson's Dodge roadster was back in running order by evening after local garage work. The party returned home bruised and cut. a broken collar bone was the only serious injury. The crash occurred east of town when the Marengo car misread the passing area, hitting Wilson's car and a fence.
The Chambers Clothes Shop will be open until noon Thanksgiving Day.

The MacGu gin case concluded at about eleven o clock in the morning with Attorney Morrison opening for the plaintiff. Four attorneys will argue through the afternoon and a verdict may be reached tonight. The Libera Borough case follows but suitability for trial remains uncertain as the term’s schedule is unsettled. Judge Wagner will be in Newton next week and work will continue toward Friday with possible extra days due to Thanksgiving.
Eighteen boys intend to attend the state conference for older boys at Cedar Rapids next Friday through Sunday. They and four adult leaders will depart on the four o clock train Friday morning.
A special Thanksgiving service of the Hi-Y club and the YWCA at the high school Wednesday afternoon features leaders Alfred Brown and Helen Long. Delegates to the boys conference stay after the program for readings, prayers, and hymns led by students including Willa Waymack and Ted Allen.
