Bill Perdock joined over 100 business men, bankers and industrialists on Governor Robert Ray's Sell Iowa tour. The Iowa Development Commission sponsored visits to Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and New York City, with travel by chartered plane.
Rep John C Culver D Iowa said SALT talks may be long and hard but offer the best hope for mankind peace and security He noted Nixon admin ABM and MIRV deployment despite opposition shows testing and deployment will continue until a binding US Soviet accord ends costly arms race He estimated the world spends 182 billion yearly on the arms race.
Norpel Jr. of Bellevue was elected chairman of the Iowa Mississippi River Parkway Commission at a Sunday meeting in Dubuque. John McCormally of Burlington was chosen vice chairman and Ivan Dull of Dubuque secretary.

A government panel warns drastic anticrime action is needed to avoid an armed nation. It foresees citizens fearing streets at night and families living in fortified cells with private guards. Suburbs would see near universal gun ownership and armed volunteers supplementing police patrols.
Army orders a life or death capital court martial for 1st Lt. William L. Calley Jr. on charges of murdering 109 Vietnamese civilians at My Lai. The case, led by Maj. Gen. Orwin C. Talbott, could carry the death penalty if he is convicted. A separate inquiry headed by Lt. Gen. William R. Peers was ordered to probe the incident.
Over 300 attendees filled the KC Hall in Washington for the annual 4-H Leader Recognition and Awards Banquet. Bob Carter presented service awards to Elmer Schneider, Clifford Conklin, Francis McConnell, and others. Mike Rich Memorial Award went to Steve Schroeder. leadership and achievement honors were given to multiple individuals, with numerous project and citizenship awards announced. Perry Palmer and others spoke on the theme The Challenge Ahead, as entertainment featured The Chanteurs and a talk by Perry Palmer.
Apollo 12 crews led by Charles Conrad Richard Gordon and Alan Bean prepared for a Moon mission conclude with a planned splashdown at 3 58 p m EST in moderate seas off Pago Pago Hornet stood by under cloudy skies 405 miles southeast of the island The mission marked a decade of manned spaceflight beginning with Gagarin and Shepard in 1961 and counting 23 American and 20 Russian flights.
At San Francisco a relief boat delivered food and medical supplies to about 120 Indians occupying Alcatraz seeking the island for a cultural center. Island custodian Glen Dodson greeted the party as federal officials delayed action awaiting Interior Secretary Walter Hickel’s decision. Coast Guard blocked reinforcement boats while allowing the relief vessel to dock under a red peace pipe flag. Richard Oakes, a Mohawk leader, insisted Hickel must come in person within two weeks.
In Galveston Texas UPI reports Butch Ainsworth 25 and three companions captured after a two day jail break during which a man was killed and another wounded. They face charges of murder assault to murder armed robbery burglary kidnapping and car theft. Five men took part. one was killed when he tried to surrender.
A Clinton Iowa hearing on alleged patient abuse at Clinton Nursing Home opened to determine if the facility’s license will be renewed. Owners Donald and Dorothy Thomas sought a grand jury probe after complaints. the grand jury found abuse, tranquilizer misuse, and overcrowding. The license had been revoked last month. Iowa Health Commissioner Dr James Speers oversaw the process.
Roy Ballinger a 22 year old from Ballinger Atlantic Iowa was killed in a motorcycle accident while on shore leave in the Virgin Islands. He had been attached to the submarine Sea Horse in the U.S. Navy. His parents said they were notified Sunday of his death.
Lt. Gen. Hoang Xuan Lam said villagers may have inflated civilian death tolls at Song My in Quang Ngai Province to seek U.S. compensation. He described the March 1968 killings as an operational accident caused by U.S. air and artillery strikes. U.S. Army spokesmen said two GIs were held in the United States and 26 more investigated.
