Macedonian laborer Fred Pratt was killed when a large boulder loosened and fell on him at the Snater Smith quarry west of town. He left a wife and three children.
Daniel Zaugg a 26 year old from West Bend died when his car stalled south of town as he tried to fix it after a Livermore Ia dance return. Wayne Reily of Irvington Ia struck the stalled vehicle causing Zaugg's death and injuring Reily.
The civil service commission recessed the hearings on six discharged Ottumwa policemen until Thursday evening November 29. Russell Swartz of Ottumwa and C I McNutt of Des Moines will handle other coast cases early next week. Evidence for patrolman John Stark was completed and inspector Carl M Higdon’s testimony was being submitted.
Des Moines Representative Paul Cunningham became the first to request nominating petition blanks from Secretary of State Wayne M. Ropes. Jesse G. Dimmitt of Ottumwa followed as a candidate for the Republican nomination for congress from the fourth district against Karl M. LeCompte. Fremont County Sheriff A. S. Christopher of Sidney filed an application without stating the office sought. The deadline to file nominating petitions with the secretary of state for the June 1946 primaries is March 15.
Mr and Mrs Allen Plumbeck of Sheridan township welcomed a boy and two girls at Mercy hospital at 8 30 p m on Thanksgiving. The mother, 21, and all three babies are reported doing splendidly by the hospital superintendent.
John White, a longtime choir member since age 16, will attend a solemn high mass at St Paul Catholic Church in Worthington and sing an offertory role to mark his 90th birthday today.
Ottumwa 16 year old Clara Louise McNulty, a high school sophomore, died at her home from scarlet fever. City officials report one known scarlet fever case in Ottumwa. She is survived by her parents and five siblings.
A jury of seven women and five men was selected in a full day session to hear the case against Carl Klatt 33 a former Iowa boys training school employee regarding the death of Ronald Miller 17 of Des Moines The first testimony began today.
A Sunday afternoon effort engages 250 lay men from Washington churches to conduct a citywide religious survey. Coordinated by the Washington Ministerial Association with endorsement from the Washington Chamber of Commerce, volunteers will visit homes in assigned blocks to record church affiliation and preferences. Arthur Peters longtime pastor of the Chester Federated and New Haven Baptist churches will end his 2 1 2 year tenure tomorrow and relocate with his wife and baby daughter Betty Louise to Hedrick Iowa to serve as pastor of the Hedrick Baptist Church starting December 1. The Hedrick church offers a larger congregation and a new opening for an aggressive pastor while Peters serves only that church. The West Chester and New Haven churches are reported to be in excellent condition and well supported by members. A farewell party with a money gift was held for the Peters family.
Funeral services for Miss Katherine Mauthe will be held at 2:00 Tuesday afternoon at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev. T. EB. White officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
A Manville community obituary records the death in Jefferson County on April 25, 1866 of a resident who married Mary Ellen Hesser, who died October 3, 1918. Surviving children are Mrs. Maggie Reighard of Fairfield, Mrs. Junie Hallock of New London, Clarence of Brighton, and Mrs. Goldie Van Winkle of Salem. one son Howard is deceased.
Lt. Col. Paul Putnam, Wake Island hero, cannot visit brothers Harold and Clyde in Washington for some time. He is on temporary duty in Washington, flew via Fort Worth and Birmingham without side trips, and is now at the San Diego naval station. He expects to be home only after February 3 and may be stationed later at Quantico or Leavenworth after his return from a Japanese prison camp release in California.

Ainsworth, Nov 24 The Ainsworth State bank opened this morning drawing many depositors and local well wishers. Open house the prior evening attracted about 250 people to tour the rebuilt bank quarters once used 14 years ago. Ray Whitehead serves as cashier with Mary Gardner as bookkeeper. C. M. Five Americans and about 40 Indians were injured as eight trucks of old Chinese smokeless powder were unloaded. British troops controlled key points to prevent further riots amid a tense calm.
