Iowa City joins a dozen states under federal rent controls effective December 1943 with maximum rents set January 1 1944. Johnson County area including University of Iowa housing faces ceilings after a local rent survey found complaints over military personnel housing costs.
Iowa AAA estimates Wednesday, based on a Washington WFA announcement, set 1944 corn loan rates at 87 to 94 cents a bushel. Rates reflect 90 percent of parity under new price support laws, rising about 6 cents from 1943. North to south variations ranged from 5 to 45 cents in 1943.
The fully clothed body of Miss Clara Beck, 47, was recovered from the Mississippi river by a state conservation department crew using a drag net. She had been missing since 4 A M Wednesday, and bloodhounds had traced a probable route from her home to a point three blocks downstream. She is survived by a sister and a brother in Lansing and another brother in Washington state.
Two men robbed Mrs. Lloyd Cramer near Buck's Place tavern as she entered her apartment. They took an $800 diamond ring a $35 diamond necklace a diamond and pearl watch and $450 in cash at gunpoint. Victim described suspects as 18 to 20 years old.
Des Moines veteran meteorologist Charles Dana Reed announced retirement set for February 28 1945 marking 46 years since he first became a weather observer and 70th birthday. Herbert C S Thom of Washington DC will succeed as United States meteorologist in Des Moines.
Des Moines agricultural readers adopted crop and livestock goals for 1445 and urged the AAA to raise hog support prices from 12.50 to 13.75 per hundredweight. They proposed extending price support to finished barrows and gilts of all weights and set a graduated scale through March 146.
KEOKUK Keokuk authorities captured Chester Smith 14 after a chase. He had escaped from a Minnesota boys’ school and was apprehended Thursday by sheriff deputies in Keokuk after a pursuit through the area.
Santa in full costume arrived by bus to Washington and was met by a large crowd of children blocking streets and filling the YMCA. The Chamber of Commerce arranged reserved steps and a free matinée at the State theater at 2:38 p.m. for hundreds of youngsters. The visit opened the holiday season and the Christmas spirit spread through the community until December 25.
The offering at the union service held in the Baptist church on Thanksgiving day totaled 75 dollars. The funds will be given to the YMCA for its work among prisoners of war. The service was well attended with the church auditorium full and additional attendees in the Sunday school room.

Sheriff Harry Maas pursued a suspect through Keokuk streets in an afternoon chase. The driver, identified as Smith, was in a car reported stolen earlier that day from Howard Van Ausdell in Montrose.
Pastor Robert Weathers reports ongoing exterior painting at Nazarene Church. Interior redecorating plans for the main auditorium are under way. The Sunday school program has expanded prompting new classroom screens and basement classrooms. Minor repairs include side entrance steps, new spouting, and overall beautification efforts.
Burial services for Milton Coffin will be held at 2 30 tomorrow afternoon at the Pleasant Plain Friends church. Rev Nora Craver will conduct the service and burial will be in Kim Grove cemetery. Coffin died Sunday morning in a hospital near Phoenix Arizona after a health-related trip. He was born December 29 1906 in Jefferson County Iowa and married Cecil Lauderman on November 26 1936. He is survived by his wife four daughters his father five brothers and two sisters.
The Washington county health unit will conduct an immunization clinic at West Chester School Tuesday at 9 am to complete the series begun October 25. The event will be held in the home making room of the school building.
President Roosevelt urged Congress that lend lease should end with the war, but the united nations partnership must endure and strengthen to secure lasting peace. He outlined in his seventeenth lend-lease report that after the war the allied system should be replaced by a permanent and strong united nations capable of quelling aggression and building economic foundations for prosperity and civilized progress.

Jennie Robertson, a lifelong Columbus Junction resident, died yesterday at the Florence Home in Omaha Nebraska after a period of illness. Funeral arrangements by Richie Funeral Home are not definite. services will be in Columbus City with burial in Columbus City Cemetery conducted by Rev. R W Calloway.
The woman born May 1864 on a farm near the Junction, daughter of John and Kesiah Suncan Robertson, taught at Columbus Junction grade schools, worked in the Columbus Safeguard printing office, served as Louisa county recorder, and was matron at Knoxville College before retiring about ten years ago. Surviving are brothers James Robertson of Columbus Junction and Harry Robertson of Richland.
