Des Moines reports a one day crackdown by the state liquor control commission in the 26 largest stores. About 140 liquor permits were confiscated as clerks checked buyers against permit books. Commission member M L Curtis said the seized books were not issued to the presenting patrons and many would be buyers left after being asked to prove identification.

Flying Twins Return After 50 Missions Overseas

United Press reports heavy Allied raids on Berlin with hundreds of RAF bombers dropping around 1 500 tons of explosives. On the Russian front Soviet forces counter attacked toward Kiev, while in Italy the British Sixth Army pushed six miles to seize the strategic Alfedena junction amid rain and mud. Two Men Injured in Highway 22 Collision
John Shalla of Kalona and C R Dorres of Lone Tree were injured yesterday evening around 7:45 when Shalla’s pickup and Dorres’s limestone truck collided on highway 22 east of Riverside near the Iowa river and county line. Both vehicles plunged down an embankment of about 16 feet as Dorres attempted to pass. Shalla sustained cuts to the head while Dorres bore a bruised and sprained leg. The heavier truck driver escaped serious injury.
