John Beard, leader of a Gypsy camp, pays a 65 fine for petty larceny and is turned over to Muscatine County authorities. A boy in custody provides details of Beard’s gang stealing a double set of harness near Muscatine and other thefts between Wilton Junction and Muscatine. Beard and accomplices are to be tried. more charges and arrests follow as officers chase further thefts and a related vagrancy case ends with a 30 day sentence for a woman.
Two Gypsy camp members were jailed in Washington county after pleading guilty to vagrancy charges. The man and woman, once living together, were arrested following thefts in the area and were brought before Squire Rogers, receiving 30 days in jail. Local notices mention a Thanksgiving party at Will Todd’s home tomorrow and a matinee at 2 PM.
