Public Health Nurses Mildred Lee and Rita Sojka report 4417 people received the Swine Flu vaccine at Washington County public clinics held last week. The nurses thank volunteers and county support, saying the wholehearted backing was greatly appreciated.
December dates set for food stamp sales in Washington County. December 6 covers city residents, December 7 serves rural areas, and December 20 open to all county residents. Purchases are at the Department of Social Services Office, 212 North Iowa, from 9 30 to 11 30 a.m.
Entertainer Jerry Lee Lewis was arrested outside Elvis Presley’s Graceland in Memphis after driving onto the driveway drunk and waving a pistol. It was his second arrest in as many days following a separate incident in Collierville where his Rolls Royce overturned. he faced charges of driving while intoxicated reckless driving and no license, released on bond.
Ottumwa Iowa police and five Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation agents investigated the stabbing death of John R Hill 51 at a laundromat. No suspects were named and authorities released few details about the murder found by two youths around 6 am Monday.
Three local residents were elected to officer posts in the Southeast Iowa Emergency Services Association. Karl Jones of Washington is president Royden Boshart of Washington is vice president and Ethel Gerot of Riverside is secretary treasurer. The four county group has 41 members from Louisa Keokuk Washington and Johnson counties and meets monthly at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday at the National Guard Armory. Programs focus on re certifying state certified Emergency Medical Technicians.
Santa Claus will visit Central Park on Friday, November 26, to help Washington merchants celebrate the annual Christmas Opening. Stores, closed Thursday for Thanksgiving, will reopen Friday evening until 9 o’clock and many will stay open Sundays 1 to 5 p.m. Santa plans to hand out candy canes to children.

Iowa Supreme Court ruled 8-0 that district court judges may serve on the new five member Court of Appeals, rejecting a bid to bar them. The decision preserves appointments by Gov. Ray of Polk and Linn County judges and others to form the interim panel beginning Nov. 1 with first opinions after Jan. 1.
Washington High School Choral Union and Hi-Fi present their annual fall pop concert on Monday November 29 at 8 p m in the high school auditorium directed by Robert Youngquist. Highlights include Spirit of 76 a Paul Johnson work with solos by Randy Mullikin Matt Hotle Jeff Schoonover and others plus Hi-Fi samples of American pop from 1900 to Ellington and Berlin with tickets at the door 1 50 for adults 75c for students.
Dale E. Yates, 21, was held on an open murder charge in Des Moines for the beating death of his 6 month old daughter Sarah Ann Kramer. The infant died Monday from internal hemorrhaging, with a broken rib and bruised lung reported by Polk County Medical Examiner R C Wooters.
