Elevator managers will add services in Iowa grain trade
Des Moines UPI reports Iowa elevator managers face expanded duties over the next 10 to 15 years. Iowa State University economist J William Uhrig says future elevators will provide drying and storage, financing and hedging, with a goal of about one million bushels annual volume to spread fixed costs. He warns many of the current 1100 elevators may fail unless they scale up. Uhrig cites 400 million bushels of corn and 100 million of soybeans needed for storage growth, and notes commercial elevators could dry and store cash grain more cheaply than farms.
