Washington Kiwanis hears Liddy on farm self help plan

State Secretary of Agriculture L. L. Liddy spoke at the Washington Kiwanis Club about a self help program for farmers during National Farm City Week. Plane crash kills 52 on De Havilland Comet from Buenos Aires

A De Havilland Comet jetliner operated by Argentine Airlines crashed shortly after takeoff from Viracopos Airport in Campinas. All 52 aboard perished including 40 passengers and 12 crew. The flight was en route to New York Idlewild with a refueling stop at Port of Spain.

Secrecy Cloaks New American Satellite

Secrecy surrounds a launch from Vandenberg adjoining facility using Atlas Agena B. Officials say the satellite is classified and could be Midas or Samos, intended to test space reconnaissance and missile detection, with two pads at the base capable of such launches.

Klett Services Held for Susan Klett at Keota Church

Funeral services will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in St Marys Church Keota for 90 year old Susan Klett with Rev C S Kempker presiding. Burial follows at St Elizabeths Cemetery Harper. Rosary will be recited Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Keota. She died at Twilight Rest Home Keota Wednesday morning.

Plan Golf Course At Columbus Junction

The 6 acre Floyd Carpenter farm west of Columbus Junction has been bought for a golf course site by the Gold Club led by Richard Duncan. B O Roundy and Rodney Slight named to planning committee. Construction planned for spring with archery trapshooting badminton and croquet among possible activities. About 100 members currently.

Church Wins Battle of Lockridge Corridor

District Judge Elmer K Daugherty ruled the South Iowa Conference of the Methodist Church owns the contested land near Lockridge. Herbert Smithburg, a Lockridge garage operator with a summer cabin beside the Skunk River, loses the right to cross the camp property to reach his cabin, ending a two year dispute over access to the road through Golden Valley Youth Camp.

Turkeys Face Price Drop Hurting Local Farmers

Washington County turkey growers report losses of 80 cents to 180 per bird as prices drop about 10 cents a pound from last year. With 5 000 to 200 000 birds per farm the impact is severe, and a proposed federal marketing order to regulate production and sales is debated by local producers. Brothers' belated Thanksgiving reunion after cross country surprise

William and Richard Wolf 17 and 19 were separated by 1,200 miles after each tried to surprise the other. Richard left Waterloo to find William at Camp LeJeune, prompting radio alerts and Marine search by the 2nd Marine Division before both agreed to reunite at their uncle John Wolf’s home and plan a late Thanksgiving together.
