Scotland Yard issued a nationwide alert after a young woman reported a car driving through central London with a bound and gagged man in the back. Police halted the vehicle and found a sailor with a scarf around his head and shoulder to protect his aching.
Washington county launches Operation Pork Lift on December 8 to sell pork at cost in local food stores. A committee led by R L Darbyshire organizes the event with swine producers, commerce leaders, and banks. Washington will meet with packing companies to supply several tons of pork and advertise the promotion.
Washington County will gain several highway improvements under a statewide 1956 program totaling 62.9 million dollars. Projects include 10.063 miles of paving on highway 1 from Kalona to the relocation of highway 92, and 9.306 miles of widening on highway 92 from Washington to the Louisa County line.
Police say clues in the Ames dorm bombing plot point to a stone wall with the device chained to a stair banister in Elm Hall. Janitor Arthur Larson dismantled the box before it exploded. authorities pursue lab findings and possible suspects.
LeRoy Davis 45 of Worthington Minnesota died in a hospital after an Iowa 33 crash two miles north of LeMars Saturday night. Davis was a passenger in a car driven by his brother. Emil Klav of LeMars drove an opposing car. Davis and his brother suffered minor injuries. Klav was unhurt.
Raymond Baker, 39, an ironworker, was held on manslaughter charges in Knoxville after allegedly attempting to shoot a pepper box from Jim Bowerman 40, missing the target and fatally wounding him.
Secretary of Agriculture Ezra T Benson urged universal help to solve farm problems at the 89th National Grange convention. He rejected rigid 90 percent price supports, cited surpluses driving down prices, and pledged to consider all ideas while stressing nonpolitical action to boost farmers, noting progress on beef dairy and eggs but a looming seven billion dollar surplus in commodities, mainly wheat and cotton.
All families connected with the YMCA are invited to a family night program at 6 15 in the Y building Friday. The evening starts with a pot luck supper two dishes per family then group singing followed by family games swimming and recreation in the gym.
A Selective Service spokesman said the draft exemption for most fathers is hoped to be approved by President Eisenhower but denied that any decision has already been made. The plan would draft childless men first, with fathers protected. The proposal was sent to the White House last month.

Earl Morrall, All-American quarterback for Michigan State, was elected president of the Washington Coffee Club this morning. The selection marks the first time the club is led by a quarterback of All-American standing, joining a list of governors, senators, and notable figures. Morrall drove to Washington last night with John and Ed Winga to spend Thanksgiving with their parents.

John T. Exley aged 61 of Woodburn was killed when the car he rode in left U S 169 near Lakota Iowa. Driver Antonio Pacheco of Des Moines started to pass a truck, saw an oncoming vehicle and apparently lost control trying to avoid the trucks. Pacheco was hospitalized at Buffalo Center.
Ralph McClain Shuman died in a Los Angeles rest home on November 17 after long illness. He had been in the home since his wife’s death three weeks earlier in Burbank. He was the youngest son of L. M. Shuman, born in Washington County and long-time local resident before moving to California. He was a nephew of Mrs. O. L. Dayton and a cousin of Ray Page.
Washington Y s Men launched a rural area canvass to recruit YMCA members and inform residents about Washington YMCA activities after a regular dinner meeting. The twofold aim is to gain members and share program details, with calls to be completed by next Tuesday and a report due. They also voted to sponsor a pre Christmas caroling event at the YMCA gym inviting the public.

A Navy F2H Banshee crashed on the deck of the carrier Ticonderoga in the Mediterranean killing six crew members and seriously injuring another. Pilot Ens Otis C Lightner of Altus Oklahoma escaped with minor injuries after the aircraft failed to catch an arresting wire and toppled over the bow. Charles E Allen of Dolton Illinois was among the deceased airmen.
