Maquoketa fire chief Harry Fischer and Assistant chief Bert Davis spent five hours pumping three feet of water from the high school basement after a valve was left open.
Des Moines honored veteran Amariah Chandler, nearing his 100th birthday, with a 39 minute Des Moines plane tour. He called the ride a near heaven moment, joined by John P. Risley, 91, G A R commander from Des Moines.
Mrs Minnie Blos si, 76, was in critical condition after a house fire that trapped her and her son Gus, 45. She suffered severe back and arm burns while Gus received arm burns and cuts from glass he kicked out to rescue her.
Curtis FE Rodecker, 61, operator of a neighborhood grocery, died of carbon monoxide poisoning in his garage after battery charging in his car. His wife discovered him when the car was still running. Coroner Eugene Smith labeled it an accidental death.
A special train of 44 carloads of livestock departed from Schleawie area in the afternoon. The shipment formed the nucleus of a 70 carload train for the Chicaro International Livestock exposition. consignments included show cattle from Kiron Ricketts Tha Crove Rattle Creek and Dayton.
A Iowa highway trooper got stuck in mud per a secretary report from Assistant Chief Warry Nestle. A farmer aided the trooper who offered to help in return for a favor but the trooper declined. The trooper asked only to see the farmer safely home and the farmer requested a favor in return.
Judd Legget, 30, of Anamosa, was injured while rabbit hunting when his 12 gauge shotgun discharged through a wire fence. The blast struck his left jaw, but he remained conscious and crawled about 200 yards to Frank Parks’ farm home, two miles south of Anamosa. Parks was away. Leggett reached the road and was found two hours later by two farm boys.
Des Moines grocer Isadore Lipsey was robbed of about $115 by two nervous youths armed with long revolvers. They fled in a car after exchanging more than a dozen shots with Lipsey who fired from the store back door. One youth had earlier taken most of Lipsey’s cash. a return shot was fired by the other as they escaped.
Washington DC sub committee of the House ways and means tentatively agreed to submit an entirely new corporate tax structure. Chairman Vinson said the plan would aid corporations facing debt payments plant expansion and capital repair.
The Chamber of Commerce committees oversee a new holiday decor plan in the business district. A large illuminated Christmas tree will stand in Central Park with twelve star-top electroliers and colorful lights across the park. Small trees will adorn storefronts, with managers free to light them.
Operators of the Postal Telegraph Company walked off their keys in a sitdown protest in Detroit on November 23. Six non striking workers kept service running as union recognition was demanded.
Fort Dodge Iowa police report Mrs. Elizabeth Kruchten aged 63 died from axe wounds inflicted by her son in law Louis J. Erie a barber two weeks earlier sources said Erie was involved in the assault with the motive undisclosed authorities stated Kruchten died today from the injuries sustained in the attack
Washington county Legion posts propel the 1st District to win the Colflesh trophy on Armistice Day with 234 members, surpassing the 202 quota. Jefferson Van Buren and Washington counties exceeded targets, while Lee County fell short and Iowa City kept the trophy after winning last year.
Keota community club hosted the annual corn growing contest banquet at the high school gymnasium with about 200 attendees. Arthur Ewing won with 127.58 yield and $30 prize, Ward Hinnerman second with 121.75 and $15, Mike L. Griener third with 117.49 and $5. Other yields listed for competitors, and Dr. Charles Friley of Iowa State College gave the address on community spirit and self-control.
The district also posted the best record in the state, highlighting its leading performance amid statewide competition.

Participating churches include Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Christian, Evangelical, Foursquare Gospel and United Presbyterian. music directed by Carolyn Hamilton with Helen Harvey on organ.

A Japanese spokesman says capture of Worth is premature and troops sit five miles from the capital. Reinforcements rush to Wusih Liang'an positions amid a looming clash with Russia over Outer Mongolia.
Judge Frank Bechly presided yesterday as the district court granted a decree of divorce in the Bernice Lang versus Joseph Lang suit. Other term divorces included Clarence Mineart from Irene Mineart, Theresa Knopp from Leonard Knopp, and Dolly Musgrave from Philip Musgrave. This morning arguments were heard in Dora Jones administratrix of the estate of T. J. Thompson against Hilton and I. B. Ravenold regarding farm property disposition.
Detroit reports that the CIO ended a five day wildcat sit down strike at two General Motors plants in Pontiac, easing fears of a winter labor dispute in the motor industry. The move followed tempers and disruptions across the automotive sector as workers pressed for negotiations.
No mail deliveries in Washington on Thanksgiving Day and no service on rural routes. The post office window will be open from eight to ten Thursday morning for stamp sales only.

Ainsworth announces the annual Thanksgiving service will be held at the United Presbyterian church on Wednesday evening November 24 at 7 30. Bethel church schedules Thanksgiving services for Thanksgiving evening at 7 30 Rev W H Parker will be with this church for two more Sabbaths before moving to Clinton Iowa. The Parkers formerly lived there.
Washington County farmers vote to reelect five officers to lead the Agricultural Conservation association for 1938. Wayne Norman chairs, Carl Oldfield is vice chair, Charles Kennedy serves, with Ray Lanbert and Howard Witting as alternates, plus W. O. Morgan as secretary treasurer. About 350 to 400 farmers attended township meetings to join the county association, with more expected as the program expands.
Ella Ruth Ropp, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Ropp, died at her parents home two miles north of Kalona after a two week illness from acute rheumatic infection. Funeral at 1:30 Wednesday at Fairview church led by Rev. Elmer Swartzendruber. Born February 1923, she was an eighth grade pupil at Pleasant Hill school and is survived by her parents and ten siblings Esther Lydia Ernest Omer Ada Edith Martha Effie Verda and Vernon all at home.
London report says Britain plans a final settlement on its war debt to the United States ahead of December 15 payments. The move aims to ease international strains amid Russia and Japan tensions and is driven by laws barring further loans to nations not meeting debts.
