President Harding named Pierce Butler of Minneapolis as associate justice of the Supreme Court to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Associate Justice Day. The nomination was announced in Washington on November 23.
In Grand Junction Indiana on November 23 the Rev EB Throw pastor of the local Presbyterian church told the Ray Hawbaker Post of the American Legion he would retract his statement criticizing those in charge of the $25 000 building He added he would not retract the claim that dedicating such a building with a dance was wrong
Harold Winpert of Tipton captured second and third class prizes in Cedar county fair baby beef show and the second sweepstakes prize a free Ames short course trip. His two calves fed on barley oats then corn and molasses sold for 111.42 dollars each after the fair.
Fay ette Iowa November 22 The Scott Township Farm Bureau staged home talent plays at the latest meeting. The Poor Married Man a comedy was performed with Thomas Fuller of the Fayette County Boy's Dairy Club Judging team in the lead role and Mrs Ray Wood as leading lady.
Dr. D. D. Porsyth warned at the Methodist Episcopal Church board meeting that large foreign speaking populations concentrate in cities. He cited 72 percent of immigrants dwelling in urban areas and noted Little Italies and Little Polands. He said many enter schools and professions but remain outside the church’s influence. In 1922 the board aided 1,220 building projects, with most in urban, white English speaking and rural communities.
A Soviet anti graft campaign sees hundreds tried nationwide. In Nishni Novgorod eight men convicted for swindling over an electrical plant contract were shot, 21 others given prison terms. In Moscow district three men faced severe penalties for false grain tax entries and 42 were acquitted.
The North Sea herring fishery has collapsed over two years as currents shifted trail and the great shoal vanished near Scotland. The Scottish Fishery Board chairman notes the loss of livelihoods for many fishermen while scientists prepare a report and chart to explain the current changes. Bottles once traveling south are now found around the Shetland area.

Sheriff W G Robb arrives from Polk County as Fort Madison prison readies for the 7:30 a m hanging of Orrie Cross for the Fosdick murder. Cross, who will die as a St Joseph Catholic church member, asks for whiskey before death. Weeks was executed Sept 8.
In Leon Iowa on November 23 attorneys for both sides in the trial of J R Sears railroad guard accused of murdering C A Blodgett Creston shop man pressed for excusal of several jurors and asked to select and examine replacements. Public interest remained low.
Des Moines gains its first woman mayor as Mrs. C. A. Morris steps into the office after outranking the city council and the mayor leaves on vacation. Morris had been elected to the council last spring and now assumes the mayoral duties.
State Treasurer W. J. Burbank is in Chicago negotiating the sale of Iowa's twenty two million dollar bond issue. The bonus board plans a careful low interest rate. thirty clerks will begin numbering service records of Iowa soldiers with priority for veterans and relatives of veterans. The bonus board offices will move from the state house to a west Des Moines building.
Julius Reynolds, a Swiss native, was arrested in New York on November 23 and charged with writing a threatening note to the custodian of Borough Hall in Brooklyn. The note warned of setting the hall on fire and was received Tuesday.
Garland W. Powell of the American Legion, based on 1920 census estimates, says Germany leads literacy with the United States eleventh. He notes illiteracy in 12 states rose due to immigrant influx and calls for American Education Week and five-year immigration exclusion to cut illiteracy by 1927.
The Department of Justice has the settlement of the Armour and Morris packing interests merger in hand to prepare a comprehensive report for cabinet review. J Ogden Armour of Armour and Company arrived in New York to confer with local bankers on financial aspects of the merger with Morris and Co and Wilson and Co.
Davenport Iowa November 23 Judge William Teophilus aged sixty four longtime district court judge died this morning after a period of failing health following a serious automobile accident years ago.
Rudolph Maurer a 37 year old constable was found on the outskirts of South Haven Minn with three bullet wounds after attempting to capture two bandits by himself. He lay still clutching the emptied pistol as the bandits fled the scene.
