Gov elect Norman A. Erbe selects Russell M. Ross associate professor of political science at the University of Iowa as executive assistant. James R. Maggert named administrative assistant. Erbe plans to meet GOP legislators to discuss reapportionment school aid and property tax relief.
Earl Mitchell of Beloit and three companions battered a stubborn car after it failed repeatedly with eight flats and a faulty transmission. They damaged the vehicle, set it on fire, and a roadside deputy's inquiry led to Mitchell being booked on a disorderly conduct charge.
Four of the six teams start the YMCA winter league with two games in the gym. Coast to Coast vs Crawfordsville at 7 00 p m and Kalona vs Columbus Junction at 8 15 p m. Sportshop and Ridge Runners have byes. Games set for Wednesdays at 7 and 15 p m.
Mrs Lulu Coleman a former Richland resident died Friday in Los Angeles where she had lived about 18 years Her body will arrive in Richland Thursday and services set for Friday November 25 at 2 pm at Gould Funeral Home Burial will be in Friends Cemetery She was born September 7 1875 in Abington Iowa married John Coleman in 1908 and leaves one son John of Los Angeles two daughters Elizabeth of Los Angeles and Mrs John Nelson of Tulsa four grandchildren and two brothers Earl of Washington state and Lloyd of Oregon She was a member of the Methodist Church.
John Wilson of Iowa City announces the Grand Opening of his new Sportshop this Friday and Saturday after purchasing Nicola Harmon Sporting 700ds Division. The store on the square’s south side will offer a complete line of sporting goods and Wilson brings fourteen years of local shop experience and a background in football and officiating.
A grim Thanksgiving week toll rises with at least seven deaths in Iowa and several other fatalities. Roland Potter and Patricia Potter, both 29, and their son Stephen, 5, died in a head on collision near Carlisle on Iowa 60. Ronald Price, 21, Hartford, is involved. Leonard and Norma Brooks die in Boone car train crash. Other victims include Robert Polly, 39, Onawa, and Mary Zinanni 49, Mount Sterling, Ill, plus Eugene Zinanni 22 and Donald Zinanni 20 hospitalized after a crash near Clarence. Willard Rude 56 dies after being found critically injured on a private road in Fort Dodge.

Clark M. Clifford, Kennedy adviser, outlines a plan to cut the White House personnel and give the president full control of policy. Kennedy aims to replace the “super secretary” idea with direct policy positions while retaining expert staff lower in the hierarchy. The Ashcroft transition details center on abolishing the assistant to the president role once held by Sherman Adams.
In Leopoldville a 12 hour clash between Congolese and U.N. Tunisian troops left casualties on both sides as Col. Joseph Mobutu expelled Ghana's Nathaniel Welbeck and replacement Richard Quashie. Welbeck fled his embassy to Ndjili Airport. Quashie also departed after Mobutu demanded his exit.
Washington merchants plan a Christmas shopping opening Friday evening November 25 and will stay open Friday night and Saturday. Santa Claus will greet children Friday night. The Shower of Gifts drawing moves to Friday at 3 p m. The formal season opener follows Thanksgiving with many stores closing Thursday and the Evening Journal publishing at noon.
Eight men from Washington and nearby areas attend the Western Grain Dealers Association convention in Des Moines at the Hotel Fort Des Moines. The four day event began Sunday and runs through Wednesday with a program of speakers on feed and grain businesses. Chuck Hotle serves as a director of the association, the country's largest state feed and grain group.
Victor Klopfenstein of Washington was among 26 Iowa State University students initiated into the Alpha Zeta scholastic and service honorary fraternity for upperclassmen in agriculture. The Ames chapter, founded in 1905, highlights high scholarship leadership and service to agriculture.
Washington's official population as of April 1, 1960 is 6 037, up from 5 902 in 1959, per the Census Bureau. County totals show 19 406 for Washington County, a slight decline since 1950, with area towns listed for 1950 and 1960 figures and varying gains and losses.
Don Stapp of Columbus Junction received minor burns to one hand when his tractor caught fire while harvesting corn about one mile east of Columbus City. The blaze caused limited tractor damage, no spread to corn, and was quickly extinguished. The farm is owned by Mrs. Alta Jordan and operated by the Harlan Keltner family.
The Rev. St. Jay Curry will deliver the sermon titled Tall With Gratitude at the union Thanksgiving Day worship service. Sponsored by the Ministerial Association, the service is at Marion Avenue United Presbyterian Church at 8 a.m. Thursday with music by the host church and the public invited.
Mrs. Marvy Reister learned of her brother Frank Barnoske death at his Logan home. Funeral rites are planned in Logan Wednesday with burial in St. Louis Missouri. He lived in Washington previously and was a Milwaukee railroad road master. Survived by wife and daughter Mrs. Gladys Smith of St. Louis.
Lester Grim, co chair of the Red Cross campaign, reports Mrs. Bacon White in Kalona has submitted the first partial rural town report. The $504.30 total shows strong effort with home and business solicitations and many new and renewing members. Rural areas note easier contacts, fewer callbacks, and ideal weather aiding the drive.
Eugene Grecian announced Bob Jacobs as the new watch maker at Grecian Jewelry Store. Jacobs previously worked five years as a watchmaker in Knoxville Iowa.
Washington UPI Fred W Heinkel president of the Missouri Farmers Association tops speculation for the next secretary of agriculture in Kennedy's cabinet. An informed source cited his strong farm income and production control stance as giving him a very good chance. Heinkel has long advised Sen. Stuart Symington on farm policy.
The kickoff for CROP will be at St. Pauls United Church of Christ Friday November 25 at 8 p.m. County workers will direct the corn canvass on Tuesday November 29. The film Sounds of Earth features a refugee family with scenes in Hong Kong. A carload of corn will be traded for corn oil to aid feeding programs worldwide. Corn oil will help bake 600 000 biscuits for nurseries sanatoriums and hospitals. County workers listed include Stephen Wiggers Cloyce Stewart Galen Widmer and others with Swartzendruber as commodity manager and Rev Wedeking secretary.
Evangelist Paw Unruh of the Iowa Rural Bible Crusade will present a magic themed program at Eicher Mennonite Church on Sunday November 27 at 7 38 p m. The service will feature Bible truths illustrated by magic and include special music.
