Council Bluffs Pottawattamie County Supervisors declare relief clients may no longer obtain surplus foods by driving up to relief offices. Relief administrator Richard Hines cited taxpayer complaints as justification for the change.
Des Moines reports show Harvest Sunday planned by churches and farms groups in nearly all counties. Rural churches schedule programs and basket dinners or homecomings for November 26 across Iowa.
John son, 77, assisting a sick neighbor during an elevator operation, lost the thumb and two fingers of his left hand in the accident near Sioux Rapids. He was one of 50 entering a coin husheng bee for Arthur Peterson when the incident occurred.
Henry D Hudgen said he was glad to pay the fine for failing to stop at a school crossing. He claimed he didn’t see the school stop and that a steer and a gle wheel lay in the street beside his car. The patrolman said no money was lost.
Des Moines state patrolmen stop motorists traveling 65 mph or faster and caution them for safety. Commissioner Karl Fischer says 60 mph is fast enough even in best conditions. Patrolmen may not issue summons or warning cards when stopping fast drivers.
Senator Clyde L. Herring announced three district supervisors for next year's federal census. J. A. Wallbank of Mount Pleasant Clem Boyle of Iowa City named as deputies. Supervisors will be paid 2000 dollars plus one for each thousand names, one per hundred farms and extra for business firms. Training begins December 4 and census work starts January 2 with population census in April.
Ames Mrs Anna K Shane Ames postmaster plans a branch postoffice as large as a Class A station to serve the fourth ward campus district. The station would consolidate the campus outlet and four substations in the fourth ward business district with total last year business over $60 000.
Dr. Barnes, director of the University of Iowa laboratories, announces 52 positive talaremia cases this month with 22 among women who allegedly contracted the fever while preparing rabbits for cooking. The total in Iowa reaches 62 for the month, up from 20 in all of November last year.
It was expected that the Harold Palmer versus G A Hees case in district court would be wound up today. The matter concerns damages over hog related vaccination claims and the jury had not been paneled on Monday with yesterday spent receiving testimony. Dismissals were filed in the Virgil Rogers and Merne Dwyer suits against J J Wright, brought by Messer Cahill and Bailey Baldrige for the plaintiffs, seeking damages from an automobile accident.
President Roosevelt arrived at Warm Springs Georgia with Mrs Roosevelt and aides for a seven day Thanksgiving holiday He had previously told friends he would come back in the fall if the nation did not go to war The couple moved to the little white house to begin their holiday plans
American Legion meeting appointed Rodney Arnold Supt BE A Ralston and Ralph Moothart to oversee building a skating rink at the vacant lot south of Lincoln school on South Fourth Avenue. A spray system is to be tried to level the surface. Legion Auxiliary to host a potluck dinner Friday at 6 30 p m with men invited to bring wives and vice versa.
West Union officer jailed 2s Burglar Alarm Salesman is a graduate of both the Iowa state prison and the state reformatory. He was held on charges of breaking and entering in connection with the Fayette county treasurer’s office burglary. Johnson, released from Fort Madison in December 1938, has sincebuilt burglar alarms. The sheriff said the idea for the alarms came while at Fort Madison or Anamosa.
Mrs. Rose Reid reports 675 county residents on Red Cross rolls for the new year with many communities not yet heard from. In Washington town 485 members are listed with 89 in ward one, 82 in ward two, 84 in ward three, 82 in ward four, and 151 by special workers. Further reports from West Thester show 27 members. 100 percent drives are noted at Wellston Dutch Creek Glendale Washington Eureka Marton, and stores or offices including Rob-Air, Lemmon’s jewelry, Dr. Mast, Dr. Davis, Farm Security, Hoover Porter’s West Chester, and West Chester Savings Bank.

Senator Robert A. Taft stopped in Des Moines to discuss the farm plank and subsidies with reporters. He warned against long term price controls and said his western tour aims to meet Republican leaders and seek views rather than seek delegates.
Folsom Prison in California reports a hunger strike among inmates, over 600 convicts confined to cells as leaders are sent to solitary. The unrest coincides with a hearing before Governor Olson where five state prison board members face ouster for alleged incompetence and neglect of duty.
J W Lemley owner of a local grocery for years died at his Joseph Oregon home at six pm Thursday. He was 88 and had been ill for years and in serious condition weeks. Funeral and burial were in Joseph with family in attendance. Surviving are his wife two daughters and a son with several relatives listed.
The Commodity Credit Corporation fixed a loan rate of 57 cents per bushel for the 1939 corn crop, based on 70 percent of parity. The rate applies to farmers in the commercial corn area who stayed within their 193% acreage allotments, covering 586 counties across 12 states including Iowa.
Oliver Lawrence Dressler alias Jack Russell, 38, was found guilty by a federal jury for the July kidnapping and killing of William Scott Hamilton near Ringwood Illinois. He received the death sentence under the Lindbergh law after an eight and a half hour deliberation by a mixed jury of five men and seven women.
The large Dewey-Yarnell business block on the square’s south side, housing the Montgomery Ward store, was sold to interests led by C. J. Jungbluth. Mrs. D. J. Dewey, part owner, completed the local transaction. The building had been remodeled a decade ago for Ward.
The Lemley family moved from this area to Brighton where Mr. Lemley and Lawrence ran a grocery. They later relocated to Des Moines and then Oregon where Lawrence pursued business. Active Baptist church members locally, Mr. Lemley joined Joseph Baptist. J W Lemley bought a store on the southwest square corner around 1905, sold it to Farmers Cooperative Exchange in 1919 or 1920.
More than 300 students in Washington schools have never been vaccinated for smallpox. Superintendent EB A Ralston urges parents to vaccinate to prevent an outbreak as Muscatine reports thirty fall cases. He cites Iowa health rules urging vaccination and notes the risks to school operations if an epidemic occurs. Washington, a progressive community, has the facilities to protect children and needs timely action.
United Press reports Britain pledges a swift seizure of German exports on the high seas with France, aiming to shorten Germany’s war effort. Nazi aviation strikes intensify with bombings on Shetland, Thames estuary, and east coast. The Italian steamer Frenona sinks after mine damage.
The church school board plans a Christmas Eve service Sunday December 24 at 7 30 in the Methodist church. The event features hundreds of candles scripture readings carols and a pageant with Joseph Mary shepherds Wise Men and angels of light.
Mrs. 8. W. Livingston travels to Chicago this morning to spend Thanksgiving with her son David Livingston and his family for the holiday weekend.
