Toledo-t Irving Tegdatz was sentenced on November 1 to a year in Tama county jail for false pretenses. He escaped using a key he fashioned to open the cell block door, according to Sheriff O Harris.
Charles City Bruce 8S Mc Kean, tenant on the W H Schnedler farm near Nora Springs, was held for the grand jury by Justice Charles Ell at Rudd on a charge of maliciously cutting trees. Twenty two walnut trees were cut and $8 worth of blaze marks were made with an ax, Schnedier charges.
Mount Ayr region farmer George Ricker forty was found dead by his wife nine miles northwest of Mount Ayr after the car he had jacked up fell crushing his chest. He leaves a wife and six children.
Farmers from Schleswig load 45 carloads of prime beef steers for Chicago and accompany a stock train to ensure proper handling. Sixty farmers from the area travel with the beefsteak special and stand ready to unload and tend their cattle if needed despite Monday's stockyard labor trouble.
Newton man Tom McDermott, 65, chased his hat several blocks after a gust tore it from his head. He then summoned Motorcycle Policeman Joe Lammers who sped seven blocks and recovered the hat, bringing it to the Newton police station.
Dubuque organist Virgil Howard, a $1 prominent local figure, was killed when the horse he rode at the Anthony riding academy near Fade Point park reared and fell backward. He was out for a leisure ride when the horse became unmanageable and firefighters tried to revive him for over 30 minutes at Dr H B Hibbs’s office.
Only two counties remained unseen in the Iowa U S Senate recount as Guy Gillette held a 2 859 vote lead. Crawford Johnson Harrison Poweshiek added 88 votes to Gillette while Dickinson netted 140 in Harrison and Gillette 50. State totals show Gillette 412 664 to Dickinson 410 805 with 87 counties official.
Charles Sessler, longtime printer in Washington and Davenport workrooms, died at his Davenport home at ten this morning. He had lived in Davenport 15 to 20 years and worked at the Daily Times there. Funeral services are set for Thursday in Davenport with burial there. He is survived by his wife Ella Conner, sister of Walter Conner of Washington. Sessler was renowned as a skilled printer from Washington.
DES MOINES NOV. 22 INS Walter H Dusty Rhodes former Iowa City roadhouse owner who tricked his wife into firing a shotgun loaded with dynamite won a new trial from the Iowa supreme court The high court reversed and remanded for a new trial after reviewingclaims of jury selection error The crime occurred Feb 9 1937 and his wife died when the gun discharged in her hands Rhodes is in Fort Madison Penitentiary working crossword puzzles awaiting the new trial and possible appeal The decision was six to three in favor of reversal.
Secretary O F E Schmitt says Washington places of business will close on Thanksgiving Day with most stores shut all day. Food stores open until 10 am. barber shops closed except the night before. drugstores noon to 4 pm. Banks closed. courthouse offices closed. post office stamp sales 8 to 10 am. Y M C A opens at 3 pm with lobby and showers afterward.
A jury was impaneled in district court to hear damages in the Marie Hora versus Vere Davis of Kalona auto accident case near Washington on Riverside road dated November 10 1937. Opening statements to follow after noon with Dunham Morrison for the plaintiff and Baldrige Wilson and the Putnam firm for the defense. Also noted were delays in other cases including Rabenold versus Morrison and the J A Work estate. Jurors include Lillian Simpson James Lemley Roy Crossett Florence Orr Orville Griggs O R O Connor Lorena Lynn Bessie Applegate William Schulty Flora Wiley Carl Molander and Alvin Smith.
Iowa National Guardsmen totaling 250 were withdrawn by governor order after serving at the Swift packing plant strike since October 20. The strike continues with about 500 union members demanding recognition as troops head home, with costs over 30 thousand dollars for the month. Sheriff Tice protested the withdrawal citing safety concerns. Adjutant General Grahl said all troops were en route home before noon today.
Des Moines reports a Thanksgiving forecast of generally fair and very cold weather with possible zero temperatures in parts of the state tonight. Snow did not arrive yesterday except for brief flurries. Sioux City recorded eight degrees above zero as sub freezing conditions are expected for Thanksgiving day.
Washington county relief officials report 1938 federal surplus food distributed to needy families will total about 70 tons, with 12 tons ordered but not yet delivered. The value exceeds 8 000 dollars, including flour potatoes beans oranges rice and many fruits and vegetables, stored at the county courthouse and distributed by Homer Conklin.
City and county officials seek bids by December 6 to build a road from the south end of Iowa avenue to Elm Grove cemetery. The Public Works Administration will fund 45 percent of an estimated 12 thousand dollar project, with the city and county covering the remaining 55 percent. Weather may delay start, but officials aim to begin and complete the work this winter if possible.
A car driven by Herman Koe nig of Riverside and a truck driven by Henry Grady of Well man collided at a Riverside street intersection this morning. Neither driver was injured and both vehicles suffered only minor damage.
Dr Robert A Black a children's diseases specialist named president of the Chicago board of health lived at Wyman as a boy and attended the old Washington academy He was the son of the Covenanter church pastor at Wyman and his family were known to Washington residents who were church members While at the academy he roomed with the late Mrs Vogt mother of Sikes Vogt according to locals
Harvey Chance 88 of Washington, a longtime South Avenue C resident, died at home after a heart attack. Born February 10, 1850 in Port William Ohio, he married Sarah DeWeese in 1872 and moved to Washington in 1875. He was a retired teamster and a Methodist, survived by six children and two brothers. His wife preceded him in death. Funeral services 10:30 Friday at Sherman’s Funeral Home, burial Elm Grove Cemetery.
Public Works Administration Harold L. Ickes announced virtual completion of 1938 allotments. Iowa received 10.29 million dollars for projects totaling 22.75 million. Direct grants reached 10.21 million with 83 thousand in loans for 228 Iowa projects. National totals show 6,533 projects funded with a 723.9 million allocation and a 724 million needed nationwide. The PWA reports a current on hand balance of 739 thousand.
John D. Rockefeller died May 23 1937 in Florida at age 97 leaving an estate of 26 410 837 dollars released in a filed appraisal. Chief assets were securities with over 17 million in United States treasury notes. Most of the estate went to a granddaughter her two children and the Rockefeller Institute for medical research.
