William J. Bryan urges a government guarantee of all deposits in national banks to stop hoarding and withdrawals. The plan would have banks reimburse the government for losses, with costs borne by banks, restoring depositor confidence and allowing business to resume immediately.
Phil E Helfer departs Ossining New York this week initiating an educational program for about 1200 prisoners. The course, above grammar but below high school level, is taught by nine college graduates including Cambridge and Oxford alumni serving terms for forgery. Columbia Cornell and others supply instructors.
Wesley Alsop a 38 year old farmer in Vincennes Indiana paid a $10 fine for drunkenness then drank carbolic acid at Jordans saloon. He tried to drink more from a bottle but the bartender stopped him. He wrestled with Capt Kruse and was jailed for his safety while relatives were summoned.
In Muncie Indiana on November 22 Oscar Farr bit into what appeared to be a hard oyster shell. A jeweler valued the discovered pearl at about $100, marking an unexpected find during a meal.
Governor Cummins halted the Davenport prize fight before it started with the Iowa National Guard.
