Men Sentenced for Shooting Police Officer Palmer
Geo Wagner alias Campbell and John Daly alias Andrews were sentenced in Marion to seven years each in the Anamosa penitentiary for shooting Police Officer Palmer. Both have long criminal records and carried safe blowing tools when arrested. Separately, Peter Ongler, elderly settler and respected citizen, was found dead in bed in Harper, age seventy, cause unknown. Modern Woodmen lodge organized in Kalona with thirty five charter members and about forty from Washington lodge joined. banquet served. William Hunt alderman and local leader killed when a tree fell on him while mowing. died instantly.

Who Was the Dead Man in Vincennes Mystery
In Vincennes Indiana on November 22 Thomas J Box, thought dead for twenty two years, returned to the city after a long disappearance in 1877. A body found two days after his disappearance was believed to be Box by some, while others doubted. His sweetheart identified the body and its shirt as Box, while a Bedford cousin and a foreman at the starch works doubted the identification. Box claims to have gone west, later returning to Bedford where he prospered, leaving the case unresolved. The story also notes a burglary at Oconto Brewing and various stock market and grain reports from Chicago St Louis Milwaukee and Detroit.

Bold robbery hits insurance office in Marshalltown
At noon on Monday the Southwestern Mutual Life Insurance office in the courthouse basement was robbed of about 6500 dollars in cash drafts and certificates of deposit. The thieves blew the safe, and no witnesses heard the blast or saw the robbers depart as the courthouse remained crowded with courtgoers.
