Fire Bites Deep as Singapore Robinsons Store Burns

A rooftop Christmas decor fire destroyed Robinsons Department Store in Singapore trapping shoppers and staff in two elevators. Initial reports put deaths at twelve with scores feared. a pregnant employee among the dead. Firefighters battled heat as mortars fell and the building collapsed to a brick shell, with losses estimated well over 1.8 million dollars.

Washington 4-H girl to help governor on Thanksgiving Day

Jane Shearer of Washington a state 4-H Council member is chosen with three other 4-H girls to assist Governor and Mrs Robert Ray entertaining elderly residents at the governor's mansion in Des Moines on Thanksgiving Day. The event marks the second year of hosting seniors without family on the holiday. Washington city council approves final payment to Manett Carter Paving Co. for sewer work and renews the Rainbow Inn liquor license. No parking signs to be posted on North Fourth Avenue and yield signs at Adams Monroe and Van Buren intersections with South Avenue B.

Area students to dismiss early for Thanksgiving holiday

Students in Washington Community Schools and St. James parochial school will leave at 2 30 p m Wednesday for the annual Thanksgiving holiday. Other area schools will be out Thursday and Friday with classes resuming Monday November 29 at the usual time.

Treasury refunds ten dollar meal for boy's rats

The Treasury issued a refund of ten dollars after two pet rats chewed half of a ten dollar bill left near their cage. An eleven year old boy, Donny Firsching, had reported the incident and sent the wreckage to the Treasury. He also received a government check for money earned from a summer job.

October income rise beats 1971 gains led by Social Security

UPI reports the Commerce Department shows Americans' personal income rose by 15.2 billion dollars in October, the largest increase since spring 1971, with more than half due to higher Social Security benefits. Excluding the Social Security rise, income grew 7.2 billion to a 962 billion annual rate.

A weather summary notes mostly cloudy skies and continued cool conditions through this afternoon tonight and Wednesday. Occasional very light snow or flurries possible with northerly winds 5 to 10 mph this afternoon and light and variable tonight. Highs in the mid 30s and lows in the mid to upper 20s with a 5 percent chance of measurable precipitation on each period.

Fire destroys corn crib and equipment near Ainsworth

An early morning fire about two miles north of Ainsworth on the old military road destroyed a large double corn crib with about 1700 bushels of corn, a wagon and a tractor on the Kenneth McConnell farm. Fire crews controlled the blaze after arriving. cause undetermined and no damage estimate yet.

Muscatine County treasurer resigns amid audit irregularities

State Auditor Lloyd Smith said Muscatine County Treasurer Loren J. Goddard resigned effective immediately after a routine 1971 audit found irregularities. A special audit by three staffers is planned, with a full report expected soon. Mervin Shafer was named to fill the remaining two years of Goddard's term.
