21 Man U S Army Platoon Fights Off 400 Vietnamese
A 21 member U S Army platoon from the 1st Air Cavalry Division repelled a full North Vietnamese battalion of about 400 troops for four hours near Kontum Province 235 miles north of Saigon. Only three Americans survived, one of them Julius C Durham an 18 year old from Pelzeryn South Carolina. The attack drew air strikes napalm and B 52s, with two flights of Skyraiders and artillery aiding the defense as Vietnamese troops were overwhelmed and fled into the jungle after heavy casualties.
