Des Moines reports a shift to chilly conditions with lows near 12 degrees and three to six inches of snow expected late weekend. Minnesota towns face blizzards and drifting snow forcing school and highway closures as Pierre reports drifts up to three feet.
Residents are urged to attend a meeting at 7 30 this evening at the M C A to discuss forming a building corporation. Business leaders initiated plans last week and the public is invited to participate. The goal is to provide more homes in Washington and aid local industry growth.
The Washington county youth conference will be held Friday November 28 at the Christian church and YMCA. Registration starts at nine with a song service at 9:30, openings by Rev Trevelyn White, then discussion groups led by Rev Merle Booth and Rev Daniel Ford. A sack lunch runs from noon to one, with afternoon sessions and a banquet at six at the YMCA featuring Mel Hatcher, Marion Stevens, a trombone solo by Paul Campbell, and an informal singing program.
Eldon L. Gardner 29 Cromwell began his first day of marriage in Fort Madison state prison where he serves a 10 year robbery sentence. Gardner wed Donna Mae Xleckner 20 Creston yesterday just before being moved to the facility.
After six months of worship at the YMCA the Washington Christian church prepares to resume services in a largely finished remodeled building. A morning sermon by Rev. T. C. Polk will open a day of special services including a noon basket dinner, a 2 pm lecture by Rev. Vernon Carter, and an 8 pm address by Dean Seth W. Slaughter on the vitality of Christianity. The project, directed by Harry Sowden, features removed partitions and refurbished walls, with a new baptistry area architecturally enhanced.
A suspect was sentenced Wednesday to prison on a robbery charge. The verdict concluded the case with the defendant receiving a term of incarceration.
Secretary of State George C. Marshall arrived in London aboard President Truman's plane to attend the Big Four foreign ministers conference. He expressed optimism about the conference and the German treaty talks while noting progress on the Marshall Plan in Congress. Arrivals expected: Molotov and Bidault likely Monday.
Mrs Clara Hanley widow of J B Hanley aged 77 died at Mercy hospital Iowa City after five weeks of illness from a stroke. She lived on a farm near Wellman for 50 years and will be buried at Wellman cemetery after services at Powell funeral home. She was born Sept 13 1870 at Letts Iowa and leaves three children Ralph Dewey and Cecil Lucie plus seven grandchildren, a brother O C Rowe and a sister Mrs George Cave.
Preparations are underway at the United Presbyterian church for a Sunday 2:30 pm talk by Sam Morris the Voice of Temperance. His large local following and radio audience are expected to attend and meet him after his past visit five years ago at the Methodist church.
Camp Fire Girls and Blue Birds in Washington total over 60 members. The organization promotes activity based learning across coven crafts from outdoor skills to science and citizenship. They will participate in Washington's Community Chest to aid community service efforts.
A ministerial association sponsors a speaker brought to Iowa by the Anti Saloon League of Iowa. He began touring November 16 with a Newton morning talk and a Des Moines evening address. The tour ends in Cedar Rapids at 8:00 p.m. with another meeting.
Flying magazine reports Russia is constructing fifty military aircraft for every one produced by the United States. The claim reflects Cold War era tensions and industrial output comparisons between the two nations.
Funeral services for Kr. V. Bedwell, 66, will be held at Stephens funeral home at 2 0 clock Saturday. Burial follows beside his wife in Greenwood cemetery, Muscatine. Bedwell died Wednesday in Bellevue hospital from injuries after his car hit a through freight train at a railroad crossing near Columbus Junction. His father Henry Bedwell lived in the Junction for years. Bedford was a member of the Moose and Elk lodges in Muscatine where he lived part of the time.
A. Robert Koch former FHA Farm Supervisor at Albia is named FHA Supervisor in the Marengo Farmers Home Administration office overseeing Iowa Johnson Keokuk and Washington Counties. He succeeds Wallace C. De Long who resigned September 19 1947. Koch will hold weekly sessions in the Washington County courthouse jury room each Thursday from 2:00 to 3:00 PM.
The jury trials for the November term of district court have been assigned for Monday December 1. The schedule targets jury cases and outlines the start date for proceedings in the court.
President Truman called for congressional authority to regulate margins and impose controls on grain, cotton, and wool markets similar to stock exchanges. Secretary Anderson urged broad powers to underwrite Europe’s food production and curb futures speculation, aiming to prevent price booms and protect grain conservation funding.
