Paris November 21 Army officials report a night long air vigil over the French Italian Alps to spot signals from the American transport plane crash landed two days ago Eleven aboard face a third night in bitter cold as rescue efforts struggle.
Funeral services will be held in Washington on Saturday at 3:30 a.m. for Mrs. Minnie C. Smith who died this morning at her Davenport daughter's home. Born June 4, 1865 in Brighton, she moved to Washington years ago and was married to Scott S. Smith February 2, 1885. Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery.
DES MOINES November 21 UP Eight hundred Iowa miners workers in government controlled mines joined the nationwide coal strike halting the flow of four to four and a half thousand tons weekly. Lt Cmdr Hamilton Atcheson said the union agreed to retain maintenance crews in the mines. There are 75 to 100 small pits supplying more than half of Iowa's coal production per G D Miller area distribution manager for solid fuels.
The newly formed Iowa Sister Elizabeth Kenny Foundation chapter will train at least 10 Iowa nurses as expert technicians in the Kenny method to prevent deformity from polio. Nurses will be chosen statewide on scholarships funded by the appeal. The drive runs Nov 18 to Dec 7 with proceeds split between state and national funds.
An unemployed veteran must actively seek and be willing to accept employment to receive readjustment allowances under the G I Bill. The Iowa Employment Security Commission, for the Veterans Administration, will modify its policy to require active job search beyond mere registration.
He said these non striking mines last year produced 1,500,000 tons of coal.

Goldie M. Vinton of Washington died this morning after a six month illness. Born January 30 1884 in Mt Sterling she moved to Washington in 1895. Survived by three daughters Mabel McGill Edna May and Gladys, two sons Elmer and William, two brothers Guy and Chester Evans, and seven grandchildren. Funeral 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Fred K. Miller. Burial Elm Grove Cemetery.
The enslaved Wallace Willis is credited with authorship of three famous spirituals including Swing Low Sweet Chariot Steal Away and I Am A Rollin according to historical notes. Willis purportedly crafted these songs during his time in the American South with ties to Methodist and Baptist influences.

Washington sources say the basic consumer sugar ration will rise by about one third, likely in April, with industrial users receiving an increase from 60 to 70 percent of their 1940-41 base. An improving Cuban sugar supply enables the plan, but rationing likely cannot end before spring 1948.

Howard Fulton 73 former Washington city clerk died suddenly while wintering with his son Earl in Alhambra California He was a longtime Washington County resident and 18 year city clerk He was born in Allegheny Pennsylvania September 3 1868 and married Josephine Greer December 12 1891 Surviving are his son two sisters in Washington and a brother in Des Moines Interment will be in Elu Grove Cemetery
Final plans outline an officer training session for 4-H clubs at Stewart school at 1 15 Saturday November 25. County officers who attended the district training in Burlington will lead the event with a general session followed by station groups for each office. In charge are Mary Ann Bauer Glen Rowe Esther Gerdes Bill Crandall Mary Knotek Ralph Scout Marjorie Gamon and Carl Yoder.
The report notes an allocation of 15 pounds per person and an additional 10 pounds of canning sugar for ration book holders this year, with expectation that the arrangement will continue.

Mrs. William S. Gunnells, 70, of Columbus Junction, died at Bellevue hospital Muscatine after a week of illness. Funeral services will be Friday afternoon with arrangements by Richie Funeral Home. Born Eva Drake at Wapello April 14 1876 she married William S. Gunnells and lived in Columbus Junction for years. Surviving are husband a daughter Mrs Guy Pretz Carl Gunnells four grandchildren a brother William Drake of Wapello. A grandson William Miller was reared in the Gunnells home.
David McLaughlin was hospitalized at Mercy Hospital Iowa Gitl after a factory accident on a farm south west of town. A crank on an elevator shaft broke his arm in two places. The operation to repair the arm went well and he remains in room 1.
Funeral services for John Mc Farland were held yesterday at 2 o'clock in the Ainsworth United Presbyterian Church with Rev. R. J. Stahmer presiding.
The chamber of commerce announced Santa Claus will visit Washington on Tuesday December 3. Clarence Logan and the Big Days committee have arranged a full day program with Jay Gould company providing talent. A clown policeman, north pole cogs, and Santa gift distribution to children highlight the afternoon festivities.
President Walter P. Reuther urged CIO to create a war chest of 12 million dollars to fund wage increases. He said the fund would aid CIO unions facing strikes and urged adoption of the CIO wage resolution against opposition from Republicans, reactionary Democrats, and Wall Street.
Victor Shipwright eight arrives as a new employee at the Gamble store in Washington. He recently began duties after moving from Osceola, Iowa. Shipwright is the brother in law of Dan Pence, proprietor of the Gamble store.

In Iowa the coal shortage prompted the light commission to ban nonessential lighting as a nine day supply remains on hand with transit stocks possibly extending nine more days under brownout conditions.
In a nationwide action led by John L. Lewis the UMWA suspends work in soft coal fields halting about 2,250 government mines across 26 states. Thousands of miners refuse to operate under a federal court order, sparking sympathy stoppages in Pennsylvania's 383 anthracite pits and threatening winter fuel supplies.
Alice Kirkpatrick longtime Washington resident died this morning at 3 o clock at the Al Logan home after two weeks of illness. Born 1860, she was daughter of Patterson and Mary Coulter Kirkpatrick. She lived west of Washington before moving to the city fifty years ago and was a member of United Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a nephew Frank Kirkpatrick and a niece Mrs Alice Savidge of Minneapolis. Funeral arrangements set for 2 o'clock Monday at Sherman funeral home with Rev George Kerr officiating. Burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.
