The Washington City Council and Plan and Zoning Commission will meet in joint session at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the council chambers at city hall for a public hearing on a proposal to rename several southeast streets. Citizens are invited to present arguments for or against the plan.
Job Service of Iowa reports Iowa labor market summary shows Washington County with a 2.2 percent jobless rate in September. Of 9,240 in the civilian labor force, 210 were unemployed, down from 2.9 percent in August while Iowa averages 5 percent and the nation 7.8 percent.

Burton Huntley and James Huntbach both 22 pleaded guilty to shooting four mallard ducks Nov 2 at the Osborne Conservation Education Center pond near Elkader. Huntley paid 15 dollars for carrying an assembled gun in a vehicle. Huntbach 80 dollars for three replacement ducks and gun in a vehicle. Federal charges pending.
In Indian Wells California police found Fred Veale 62 and Mary Elizabeth Veale 57 dead with Fred shot in the chest and Mary dying from a head wound. Authorities say they argued Thursday and Mrs Veale shot her husband then killed herself with a .38 caliber pistol. The couple planned burial in California with children Tom of McAllen Texas and Lisa of San Francisco given notes.
District Court Judge Charles N. Pettit denied Griffiths request for a bill of particulars in eight state income tax evasion indictments. He ruled the charges sufficiently inform the defense and rejected claims of selective prosecution by the Iowa Department of Revenue. Griffiths faces four counts of failing to file and four counts of failing to pay taxes for 1970 to 1973.
Russell L. Zook Sr., 32, pleaded guilty to receiving or concealing stolen property from Metro Ford in Des Moines. He was given a five year deferred judgment and probation with restitution to Metro Ford or its insurer. The case involved the theft of a 1974 pickup and a garden tractor.
Kirkwood Community College sponsors evening farm management courses at Brighton Elementary School with registration on Wednesday November 24 at 7 30 p m and classes starting November 29. The winter term covers marketing topics farmstead planning and current agriculture issues. VA approval allows GI Bill benefits with eight percent increase. a new 10 hour unit on farm electrical systems repair is offered with a $10 registration fee. Patricia Hearst, 22, freed on $1 million federal bail after her family posted $1.5 million in surety. She awaits appeal of a federal bank robbery conviction, under conditions including residence with her parents in California and regular reporting to a probation officer. The judge rejected a new trial bid over alleged withheld witnesses. Hearst’s transfer to home captivity ends nearly three years of custody.
Senator Edmund S. Muskie of Maine abruptly ended his bid for Senate Democratic leader and endorsed Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota. He said he could not devote needed attention to the role, leaving Humphrey to lead against Robert F. Byrd and Ernest F. Hollings as Mike Mansfield retires.
A Cedar Rapids two story home fire Friday killed one child and left another in critical condition. Phillip Salsberry died of smoke inhalation at age one. Angela Salsberry, five, remained in critical care at a Iowa City hospital. Mrs Salsberry naped as flames started in the kitchen area. Fire Chief Edsel McMickle credited engine five for location aid. A fireman suffered a minor injury.
President-elect Jimmy Carter, after six hours of CIA briefing on sensitive matters, is to receive a security and intelligence operations overview from Henry Kissinger at his Plains home with Vice President-elect Walter Mondale. Bush said Carter’s briefing focused on mechanics, not policy, and arrangements for ongoing intelligence updates are being arranged. Nixon reportedly attempted a late night call to Carter, which did not connect, while Carter received a warm two-page letter from Nixon offering congratulations and advice.
