In Angola Louisiana a prisoner was halted by a guard while stealing a box from a cold storage locker. The convict claimed the box contained rocks but the guard opened it to reveal three dressed Plymouth Rock chickens awaiting frying.
A. E. Paul of north Washington had planned to feed winter stock with shocked corn but vandals toppled 40 shocks Sunday night November 15. Neighbors helped grind the fodder Tuesday to prevent spoilage, hauling to a silo built from cribbing. The Dittmer farm owners are Chris and Henry Dittmer.
United States Britain and Canada will meet soon to pool knowledge on the effects of atomic explosions. A Bermuda conference may discuss further cooperation, but the talks will not cover atomic policy or weapon development.
A jury in district court freed Mrs Dea of OMVI by a not guilty verdict delivered around 2 p.m. after deliberations began at 11:35 a.m. The case, State of Iowa vs Dea, was heard before Judge J G Patterson.
Washington high school season tickets for home games are on sale under Carl Paetz. Boys from the school handle sales and tickets can also be bought at Falk's Kleins' or Brody's on the square.
Washington Chamber of Commerce sponsors a football banquet at the YMCA where seniors juniors and sophomores receive letters. Carl Paetz presents major letters to seniors and co captains Les Snow and Dean Schmitt are announced. Vocal numbers conclude the program.
Tickets sell for 3.60 dollars for the eight home games. Single game admission is 0.60 dollars. Tickets may be punched only once per evening.
Three North Korean fugitives dashed across the neutral zone into Allied custody seeking amnesty. The United Nations proposed turning them over to the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission to decide their future amid a meeting that could derail the prisoner exchange program.

Jacob Good 69 retired farmer of Wayland died Thursday night in Washington hospital. Funeral services Sunday at 1 30 p m at the Andrew Tschantz home and 2 p m at Wayland Mennonite church with Rev E S Mullett and Rev Simon Gingerich officiating. Burial in North Hill cemetery. He was born February 1 1884 in Hopedale Illinois and married Bertha Woods in 1908. Survivors include a daughter Mrs Andrew Tschanty two sons Raymond and Dale two brothers Joe and Amos and two sisters Mrs Emanuel Heiser and Mrs Albert Heiser.
Leland Clapper, 67, died Thursday afternoon in Tulsa after a heart attack. He was born to the late Marion and Mrs. Clapper of Washington and a 1903 Washington High School graduate. Survivors include daughter Roberta and two grandchildren in Van Nuys California, two brothers Earl of Proctor Minnesota and Lyle of Chicago Illinois. Burial reportedly planned in California. Funeral arrangements are indefinite.
A Treasury official says spending could be cut by six billion dollars in fiscal 1955, reducing the federal deficit to about four billion. Defense would bear much of the cuts, though any reduction must not threaten national security. The official stressed he was sharing a personal view, not policy.
In Trieste about 1,000 demonstrators protested Italian discrimination in the military government. The crowd stormed City Hall doors and invaded a nearby restaurant, hurled bread, and later received soup before dispersing without violence. Police allowed the march with restrained crowd control.
French Foreign Minister Georges Bidault announced to the National Assembly that Britain has agreed to a treaty linking Britain to the proposed six nation European Army. The pledge aims to guarantee that West Germany will remain in the European Defense Community as it contributes 500000 troops. Bidault urged unity for a strong negotiating position with Russia.

80-year-old Emett Buckman of West Liberty died at 7:30 am Thursday at Restopia nursing home in Columbus Junction where he had been a patient. Services set for 2 pm Sunday at West Liberty Presbyterian Church. Burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery West Liberty. Survived by one son one daughter one brother and one sister.
The Justice Department moved quickly to block Carl Austin Hall and Bonnie Heady from marrying before their scheduled December 18 execution in Missouri. Officials said no marriage would be authorized or permitted, ending speculation of a wedding on death row.
Francis Dalton sues Basil H. Dalton for divorce in Washington. They were married June 27, 1953. She seeks custody of their unborn child and asks the court to require the defendant to pay confinement costs and child support.
Rainfall in Washington Thursday and Thursday night totaled 0.47 inch, according to the official weather observer.
On twenty three acres at the Elliott McKinstry farm, native timber was turned into functional farm structures. William McKinstry, a carpenter, sawed 3460 feet from his own logs with the Dublin area Waterhouse mill run by Glen C. Yoder. He built two hog houses, a hog shade, a hay feeder, and ten gates, estimating costs of about 44 dollars for the houses and 15 dollars for the feeder. The hog shade serves as summer shade and winter shelter with hinged panels. The lumber is primarily white oak and red elm, and more timber remains for another shade or feeder.
A semi-trailer truck owned by Carmichael and Son of Oskaloosa driven by Delbert B. Malin jack-knifed on highway 92 at 3 15 this morning. The impact caused about 250 in windshield and right rear damage. The westbound truck, meeting a bus near the South Fork Long Creek bridge 2 1 4 miles east of Washington, slid the trailer off a wet curb and sent the tractor into a ditch. Malin was not injured.
Home Economist Marvel Funk has been named Washington county extension home economist. She just graduated from Iowa State college in June 1953 and will assume duties December 1 after finishing training in Adams county. Funk is currently in Washington working with retiring home economist Eloise Brown.
A group of women representatives from Washington county formed a nursing service publicity committee at the health unit to promote countywide health projects. They intend to meet three or four times yearly with the county public health nurse to discuss programs and relay information to local clubs to boost participation. The immunization program was discussed. Attendees included Mrs. Robert Stephens West Chester Mrs. A K Stoutner Keota Mrs. Lyle Frye and Mr. Battersen Kalona Mrs. Dwane Henss Crawfordsville Mrs. Lee Ebner Haskins and Mrs. W L Gates Washington.

Senator Robert Hendrickson of New Jersey says Supreme Court Justice Tom Clark should testify about the Truman era handling of the Harry Dexter White case. He plans to urge the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee to invite Clark to testify as part of its investigations into alleged spymaster ties and postwar government decisions.
Three Iowa teenagers confess to robbing three Texas service stations within hours. Deputy Sheriff Tommy Grant identified suspects as George Louis Peek 19 Ida Grove and brothers Herbert Charles 18 and Leland Bishop 17 Mt Pleasant. They were captured after a 100 mile per hour chase. $556.90 recovered.
Richland high school junior class will stage Quit Your Kidding at the school gymnasium November 23 at 7 30 p.m. Lead roles go to Joan Baker and Jimmy Brenneman with a full cast including Ann Hoekstra Bernadine Baker Jim Brenneman and others.
