A school dress code shift ends the ban on girls wearing slacks at Ottumwa High. Principal J F Van Antwerp says the plan was approved after a general meeting where students chose slacks over dresses. The principal asked for consistency in attire for health reasons.
Keokuk District Judge J R Leary took under advisement a case by Charles F Hancock and George Burns police officers against Walter Blaisdell city commissioner of public safety. They claim it is the defendants duty under Iowa law and Keokuk ordinances to fill police vacancies by promoting from the civil service eligible list. They seek 500 dollars for suit expenses. Hancock and Burns passed a May 9 civil service promotion exam and are eligible for the existing vacancies including assistant chief of police two desk captains and one detective.
Mrs Dorothy Thompson Phillips 27 formally charged with first degree murder in Muscatine district court. Hearing date not set. She was arrested Oct 9 on information filed by county attorney Frank Drake and has been held without bail. She testified during Raymond Tracy trial denying any plot to kill James Thomas Payton.
A spokesman for rubber director William J. Jeffers said he remains opposed to Western congressmen' s push to delay nationwide gasoline rationing set for December 1 by 90 days. He argued national gas rationing is vital to the rubber conservation program despite calls for an investigation.
President Roosevelt issued a directive to war and navy secretaries to bar government employees from enlisting or receiving commissions in the armed forces until their essential status is confirmed. He urged similar limits for essential munition workers and noted a likely two to three month study to determine who is truly irreplaceable.
The 1942 autumn concert by the high school and junior college mixed chorus, under Boyd White, filled the auditorium with parents and friends. A standout was the senior girls sextet singing White Christmas with John McGaffey’s whistling obbligato, drawing an encore and extra applause.
County Attorney Owen will close his Washington office for wartime service and enlist in the United States Navy. He has moved most furnishings, plans to finish enlistment in Des Moines next week, his wife and baby will join relatives in Davenport, and an appointment will be made to handle his duties during his absence.
Washington enjoyed summer-like weather with a 78 degree high, a record for this late in the season, and a mild 62 degree low overnight. The warm spell marked the highest temperature of the month.
Rev. Alfred Trenerry, pastor of the Washington Baptist church, will speak Sunday evening on Bonaparte Baptist churchs centennial program in Van Buren county. Ordained there September 16, 1907, while at Central college in Pella, he met his wife nearby. There will be no evening service at the Washington church.
The remarks suggest the county plans to install an appointee next week to assume duties when the current county attorney leaves.
Washington ministers schedule the annual union Thanksgiving service at the United Presbyterian church next Thursday at 10 a.m. Rev. W. J. Stevens will deliver the sermon on Expressions of Gratitude with music by the United Presbyterian choir directed by Carolyn Hamilton. All community members invited. offering to benefit the YMCA world relief program for war prisoners.
Boston debuted the United States first subway in 1897 linking the Tremont Street corridor to the Public Garden via steam powered trains. The historic tunnel established a new urban transit model influencing cities nationwide.
Rev. W. H. Hemphill, 68, former pastor of the Ainsworth United Presbyterian church, died at his home in Ainsworth. Funeral services will be in the Ainsworth church with Rev. George Kerr presiding and burial in the Ainsworth cemetery. He was born in Ireland in 1874, educated at Temple University and Xenia seminary, and served pastorates in Illinois, Iowa, and Ohio before moving to Ainsworth. He leaves three children and a widow. One daughter died in an accident last summer.
Washington and nationwide will see a one week coffee freeze from midnight November 21 to November 28 to prepare for wartime rationing. Purchases resume November 29 under the rationing program. Institutional users face registration next Monday through Wednesday, with forms mailed to the rationing office. Coffee rationing uses war book No 1 and issues book No 2 next year. registration not required for those already holding book No 1 with sugar rationing history.
James A. Nicholson 81 died at 12 10 this afternoon at his home 428 East Main street after long illness. Funeral services 2 30 Sunday at Church of Christ Rev Ivan Riess to conduct burial Pleasant Hill cemetery. Survivors include Flora Kephart wife three daughters Zaida Proudfit Marie Seiler Nita Bidwell. sons Walter George. 12 grandchildren 13 great grandchildren four brothers and two sisters. He was born November 16 1861 in Washington county and married March 2 1887.
Chicago judge Matchett reports in a letter to Miss Margaret Doolittle that he is improving after a recent automobile crash. He has returned home from Presbyterian Hospital after nine weeks of care and hopes to resume work soon. Earlier he survived a gangster attack in Chicago and has a strong legal record.
A speaker arrived in Washington to deliver an address at the funeral of the late Mrs. Frances Eicher, arriving at her request.
American troops and their British and French allies closed a shrinking coastal triangle around Bizerte and Tunis, trapping German and Italian forces. A mobile American column cut communications between Tunisia and Tripolitania as the stage for a possible rapid climax, described as a desert Dunkirk by Eisenhower.
A city hall hearing on street surfacing assessments in Washington found no objections from residents. Two property owners sought refunds for preexisting rock, but the council ruled the extra rock created proportional improvements. The council approved the special assessment plan and set an $8,652.55 bond sale, with legal notice published in the Journal.
The Washington county American Legion monthly meeting is set for Tuesday evening November 24 at Kalona. The Kalona post will host Legionnaires from across the county and provide the program and entertainment.
