Washington residents will pledge support December 1 to 3 for the YMCA budget covering the next year. The drive aims for 225 regular, about 100 sustaining, 200 boys memberships and sizable gifts from firms and individuals. The YMCA serves as a community center with extensive gym use and programs in religious and physical education under Director E. W. Derrick.
President Coolidge and Secretary Mellon favor returning the treasury surplus, about 300 million dollars, to income taxpayers. Congress members urged spending plans but the White House remains opposed to a permanent tax cut. He backs economy policy tied to refunds and rejects a car tax repeal.
Florence dispatch reports Harold Wheeler eighty barricaded in Knestree house after shooting at Sheriff Henry Gambre of Williamsburg County. Wheeler, accused of trying to wreck four Atlantic Coast Line passenger trains, held his mother as shield. Bloodhounds traced trail from rail obstructions north of Lake City. deputy J A Dorsey and railroad cop investigated.
The union Thanksgiving service will be at the Presbyterian church at ten in the morning. The Washington ministerial association announces a one hour program including organ prelude hymn invocation scripture reading special music prayers by Rev Wylie and Rev Button offering for the interchurch committee sermon by John D Kern and benediction with organ postlude.
Three hundred eighty different people contributed services to Washington Y M C A. projects in the last year. Officials call the effort a strong community investment and credit the group with broad local benefit.
New York Nov 20 Dry Democrats from the west and south likely nominating William Gibbs McAdoo for 1928. Edwin T Meredith predicts a dry platform with prohibition enforcement, possibly in the middle west. Meredith notes Smith's elimination and McAdoo as a possible dark horse choice.
The Y M C A announces a water carnival Tuesday November 30 at 7 45 PM at the association pool. Admission is 15 cents for adults and 10 cents for children with proceeds for new pool equipment. The program features life saving demonstrations diving races back stroke, a candle race and a class demonstration by Miss Florence Cunningham's group.
Mrs. George Harris died after plunging into a watering tank to extinguish flames in her clothing. Officers say she attempted to start a fire with kerosene, an explosion occurred, and she rolled in the snow leaving charred clothing and superficial burns. The body was found by her husband on the farm near Bur dette, Iowa Falls.
Northwestern leads Iowa 7 to 0 after a turnover and a sustained drive on a snowy Dad's Day in Iowa City. Key plays include Gustafson 77 yard run nullified for offside and Baker scoring on a one yard plunge after Lewis and Armis advances settle the field.
Nov 26 Crawfordsville reports Dr. N J Lease has purchased the Olde garage. His son Cee Lease will run it. The Lease family plans to move from Ft Madison to Olds soon. Mr and Mrs Huston were visitors in Washington last evening.

A regency crisis looms with five year old Michael as heir and a council. Marie receives reassuring cable from Serbia. She sails on the Berengaria after reaching New York.
The Methodist choir staged Tsula of Holland with Dutch scenery and period costumes. Jesse J. Miller led as Peter Cats with Everette Griffith and Winifred Allen starring in a lively acted and sung romance. The ensemble included a long list of named cast, chorus members, and the director Jesse J. Miller.
John D. Jones of Crawfordsville spent yesterday visiting local business contacts and making calls to network and discuss opportunities.
The Keck versus McKinstry case was submitted to Judge Charles A. Dewey after arguments by both sides. Carl M. Keck seeks to quiet and establish title as trustee to about 900 acres in Washington county under a trust set by the late John McKinstry, with McKinstry heirs opposing. The trial covered trust relations, deeds, and administration under the 1914 and subsequent agreements, with Keck testifying and numerous exhibits admitted.
Lewis Warren, son of Mr and Mrs J H Warren, becomes part of the Washington Democrat advertising department replacing O H Sifert of Fairfield. He brings prior ad work with the Democrat for two summers at Cornell and was business manager for the Verne Jay Players with partner Verne Jay.
Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Walker announce the birth of their son Urban Martin Walker. The newborn adds a new member to the Walker family with both parents listed for this regional birth notice.
Funeral services for Robert Fal ton Campbell 84, Civil War veteran and former Keota area resident, will be held Sunday at 1 38 in the Methodist church. He died Wednesday night in Des Moines where he had lived for years. Survived by his widow, a sister of D Carria, a daughter Mrs. Fred Wicker and a son Karl Campbell, all of Des Moines. Campbell once farmed near Keota and later worked in Keota’s furniture and undertaking business. His home in Washington was demolished by a cyclone in 1873.
The lecture will move from the Y M C A community room to the gymnasium on Monday evening at seven thirty instead of eight. A reception by the Fornightly Club will follow in the Community room immediately after the talk.
Henry Stevens testifies on his birthday at Somerville Court House claiming he was at Lavallette home and away from Mills murder scene on September 14 1922. He says he spent the morning downtown fished in the afternoon and evening, and that he was familiar with shotguns but had not owned or fired a pistol in 25 years.
