Ken Bauer named Washington's new police chief
Kenneth Bauer 35, completing sixth year on the force, was chosen by the City Council Monday to be Washington's chief of police. He will begin orientation with Chief Jack Cherry December 1 and be sworn in January 2. Bauer's pay starts at 715 dollars per month, rising to 780 after six months. The selection followed an eight-candidate field and a safety committee review.

Washington police investigated a Monday break-in at the Don Fenno residence on Orchard Drive. Greg Fenno alerted officers after returning to find two rooms in disarray with contents strewn about in a bedroom and the study and office. entry appeared through a back window. Three Minor Traffic Crashes Reported in Washington County
Washington County sheriff's officers investigated three minor accidents recently. Kenneth L. Malley of Griswold rear ended a soft drink truck driven by Gerald McGaffey of Washington at Jack Hamilton's Clubhouse entrance. Malley faced a failure to stop charge. Elsie Kathryn Miller of Kalona was hit by Charles Jay Whetstine of Iowa City as she turned into a farm driveway, causing $240 damage and a fence impact. Darlene K. Harper of Ainsworth struck a deer on Highway 218 near Riverside, with $300 damage after hitting a second deer.

Mark Thompson of West Des Moines received a commendation from local fire authorities after rescuing two male roommates from a two story house fire in Iowa City. He woke to the blaze at 3 am and guided Kevin Hovick of Fort Dodge and Curtis Fawkes to safety with firefighters lifting them from a second floor balcony.
