Washington County residents bought 1.1 million in war bonds during the third war loan period, while bank deposits rose 2.16 million from 9.246 million to 11.407 million between July and mid October.Officials note deposits reach a record high and reflect county prosperity as war funding accelerates.

DES MOINES The state liquor control commission reported Thursday that 26 cases of liquor were stolen Tuesday night from the state store at Akron. Twenty-six cases total 312 bottles, enough for 624 weeks of rations for one patron if it all were whisky. Liquor Commissioner M L Curtis said the loss aggregated about $750. He said it was the first store robbery in about a year.
The Office of Defense Transportation asks Gov. Hickenlooper to loosen truck weight limits to allow large gasoline transport trucks to carry full loads of fuel oil. John H. Gillespie says current rules force under capacity loads for the heavier oil, which weighs about a pound more per gallon.
The National Labor Relations Board ordered Fisher Governor Co in Marshalltown Iowa to stop discouraging employees from union activity. The action follows a complaint by the International Association of Machinists AFL accusing the firm of unfair labor practices.
