A blaze three miles southeast of Dickens in Clay county destroyed a corn crib holding 10,000 bushels of corn oats and soybeans and a large haystack. Ray Ingram suspects a rubbish fire sparked the flames. Fire caused about 10 000 dollars damage.
Fourteen of sixteen new tires stolen weeks ago from Schnoor and Marsh warehouse were recovered. Irvin Wilson, 25, Spencer, admitted theft to Clay County authorities. George Brown, Herman Swanson, and Charles Inbody, all of Schaller, signed statements admitting they received stolen property. The Schaller trio posted bond. Wilson and his brother Oral, 20, were jailed on a forgery charge, pleaded guilty, and were sentenced to ten years. They escaped while held for transfer, but were recaptured three days later in Galen, Kansas, and returned to Spencer.
At the Oregon State hospital for the insane in Salem a dinner served to 460 inmates caused a sudden wave of poisonings with more than forty deaths reported. Staff doctors battled the outbreak as investigators trace contaminated eggs from shipments to the hospital and expand inquiries to other destinations.
Washington county plans farm to market road work after World War II with $69,000 anticipated for the county. Havre to Crawfordsville and Dublin to Talleyrand are the two routes eyed for grading bridging and graveling when funds freed. Coroner Dr J W Bailey ruled death by asphyxia. Firemen found the body in a doorway from the bedroom. Crook was a regular entrant in Iowa state fair old fiddlers contests.
Darrell Einck two year old son of Mr and Mrs Fred Einck was saved from drowning in Dry Run Creek by City Engineer Charles Alfillischeh and Hjalmar Carlson on a dredging project site. The men on a nearby bridge pulled him from a creek hole after he fell while playing on the bank and then searched houses to locate his home.
Washington county Farm Bureau reports no campaign results yet from the annual drive begun Tuesday. Monday night rain hindered canvassers as dirt roads remained impassable, delaying planned outreach in all townships.
Mrs Herman Wallace aged 69 died at three this morning at her home 1206 East Second Street after a long illness. Funeral services set for 2:30 Saturday at Shermans Funeral Home led by Dr R C Keagy. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Survived by two sons Harold Reynolds and Lee Wallace both of Washington and three stepchildren plus a Chicago brother.
