Senator Edwin C Johnson proposes an amendment to the censure resolution arguing the Communist threat is international and requires ongoing investigations. McCarthy remains ill in Bethesda and debate plans hinge on his return and party positions.
Two grade school girls Judy Gramm 13 and Belva Stadt 15 were beaten and kicked by six teenage girls described as the Blue Jeans gang. The attackers ripped clothing and threatened arson with cigarettes as police link the incident to a known city gang. Judy suffered a possible fractured pelvis and both victims received treatment for bruises.
At the United Nations Andrei Vishinsky handed Russia’s reply to Eisenhower’s atoms for peace plan to the U.S. just before the General Assembly debate. He sought a meeting with U.S. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. and Lodge called the sponsors into private session. The Political Committee canceled its morning session. No public details about the Kremlin’s answer were disclosed.

Washington public library closes this Saturday after Welcome Week to celebrate with Children's Day from 2 to 4 p.m. Guests will sign the guest book receive souvenirs and tour the building focusing on the children's section. An exhibit of dolls owned by Miss Jane Berdo and an American paintings display will remain open through Saturday evening for all visitors.
The Fortnightly club Music Dept led by Mrs. John Phleger cataloged the late Carolyn Hamiltons extensive music library now housed at the public library. The collection, enriched by Fortnightly music, Myrtle Spear sheets, and varied choir and soloist scores, is available for local musicians, choirs, and accompanists to borrow.
Three Washington county men volunteered for induction and left for Camp Chaffee Arkansas for basic training. The group included Charles George Stumpf of route 3 Kalona John Bernard Metz of route 2 Riverside and Anton Charles Kiefer Jr of Kalona.
Washington county sent many delegates to the Iowa Farm Bureau convention in Des Moines. Richard Stephens of Ainsworth declined candidacy but voting delegates will choose a successor. Attendees include Joe Jones and numerous local residents from Ainsworth Washington Crawfordsville Riverside and Crawfordsville Rural Young People members.
Buenos Aires reports Congress may be asked to expel two Radical opposition members, Oscar E. Alende and Alfredo Ferrer Zanchi, charged with inciting students during last month’s strikes. Observers say the move would strip parliamentary immunity, likely supported by Peronists who outnumber the Radicals 150 to 12. The charges follow a Peronist campaign blaming Radicals and clergymen in Cordoba for recent unrest in Argentina.
Police say no new suspects in the August 31 8 year old Jimmie Bremmer murder case. Lyle Walter Palmer 36 who confessed is not the man. Palmer implicated visiting Sioux City day before the boy vanished but his story failed under questioning. Jimmie’s body was found four weeks after he disappeared. A 50 year old Omaha salesman remained hospitalized after police did not link him to the crime.
Lemmon's Jewelry of Washington has been appointed representative for Towle Sterling silver in Washington county and surrounding areas. The store's sterling department now includes International, Lunt and Towle lines.
Will Eicher 88 died at his daughter’s Wayland home at 9 30 a m today after a long illness. Funeral services set for Saturday November 20 at 2 p m in the Wayland Mennonite church. Burial plans include moving the body to the Schlatter home Friday afternoon and to the church Saturday at 1 p m. casket remains closed. Born January 16 1866 in Washington county he is survived by his daughter Mrs Schlatter a son Harvey Eicher and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
At the 1954 Iowa Farm Bureau convention in Des Moines delegates urged the Legislature raise state income tax first and sales tax second if more money is needed. They vowed to vigorously oppose a state property tax and pressed for equalized assessments and higher state aid to schools as a property tax replacement.
The State Department said Noel, Herta and Hermann Field may return to the United States if they wish. Spokesman Jelenry Suydam declined to reveal their intentions or whether they are Americans free to return. Officials believe Russia pressed satellite states to release them as part of a coexistence campaign. Ravndal met the Fields in Budapest and said they were well and in good spirits. Field has a stomach ailment and both will seek treatment in a Budapest hospital, with privacy requested.
State Health Department says a survey of 21 Iowa communities examined nearly 8,000 children and found five times fewer decayed teeth where water contained the proper fluoride level. No illnesses from fluoride were recorded in towns with natural fluoride in the water.
The Ke-Wash Retarded Children's Association with state and national groups launches a local fund drive to support education and a potential center for retarded children. Seventy percent stays local. 20 percent funds state research. the rest supports national work. President Eisenhower backs the effort in a letter citing National Retarded Children week starting November 14.

In Duncan Iowa two 16 year olds died after their car collided with a pickup driven by Jerry Zrostliks brother Francis on a county road a mile south of Duncan. Jerry died at the scene while Vincent Buzicky died later at Mason City hospital. Francis Zrostlik was hospitalized in Mason City. The convertible burned after the collision as dense smoke from burning weeds obscured the road. The youths were returning from school and Francis was en route to Duncan when the crash occurred.
