Des Moines column reports United States senator elect George A. Wilson intends to travel to Washington around December 1 to confer with Senate Republican leaders and secure lodging. He will stay in Iowa until after January 13 when he delivers the biennial legislature message.
President Virgil M. Hancher announced the State University of Iowa will expand the Russian language program in the second semester. The 13 week advanced course will join the 13 week intensive basic program, currently offered by four institutions nationally and unique in the Midwest.
Mrs. Charlies Muncey, 85, was found dead by neighbors in her McIntire Iowa home Monday night. Coroner said she had been dead 24 to 48 hours. Over $500 was found on her in a home-made money belt. Her husband died years ago and she had no children.
Ottumwa officials denied a milk distributors request to ease the ordinance. Distributors argued looser rules would boost supply, but the group favored maintaining quality. A school-milk contractor failed to deliver on Monday, prompting debate over an actual local shortage.
Osceola reports the drowning of the two year old son and only child of Rev. Harry F. Stickle. The boy died Tuesday in the fish pool at the A. F. Wade residence. The Rev. Stickle serves as pastor of the local Presbyterian church.
Six men face larceny charges in municipal court over a cross country turkey theft. Herman Heitshusen of South Amana said he and his son bought 315 hens and 33 toms for 2700 dollars in North Platte Nebraska and were driving home with them when the theft allegedly occurred. Two suspects remain at large. Lloyd Livingston John Wood and Sam Inserra are jailed in Polk County or Omaha.
A marriage license was issued at the courthouse yesterday to parties seeking formal union. The record notes the filing at the court and confirms the license is in the official registry.
Heavy rains and muddy roads delay the county scrap metal collection in five townships around Washington. Earle Libe, chairman of the salvage division, said no date is set. the effort may be scrapped this fall if weather does not improve. Farmers may still deliver at the salvage depot or call the office for pickup.

President Roosevelt ordered selective service registration for all youths who turned 18 since July 1 1942. The plan spreads the registering over the last three weeks of December potentially adding about 600000 eligible for service under the new draft law. Hershey directed local boards to implement the law while continuing future registration for those turning 15 after January 1.
Des Moines reports that coffee buyers with more than one pound on hand must list their stock as of November 238. Deputy OPA administrator Paul M. O’Leary says deductions will come when applying for war ration book number 2, reducing stamps for excess inventory and forcing buyers to stop purchases until excess coffee is used at ration rate.
Twenty more petit jurors were drawn at the courthouse after 26 of 50 were excused. The jury trial for William A. Shalla versus Joe Kupka et al is set for November 30 at 1 30 PM, with a possibility of one or two other cases being tried that term. Washington Y M C A pledges totaled $2465 on the first day of a campaign to raise $6000. The drive began yesterday and continues today with over 200 prospects still to be seen. Forty volunteers, led by ward captains Marion George, Robert McFarlane, Lee Holland, and John Owen, plan further visits to secure support as former donors in the armed forces may have limited giving.
The American Legion held a regular meeting in the Legion hall with post commander Martina Whittaker presiding Invitations were extended to the Women's Relief Corps and Daughters of Union Veterans to meet in the Legion hall and acceptances were read from the two women's organizations formerly meeting in G A R hall a rationing board site The Legion donated 10 to the school milk fund and earned 36 serving lunch at the Stewart Voorhees sale After the meeting Legionnaires hosted inductees at an open house before their departure for service in the civilian defense room and Legion hall where they shared doughnuts and coffee Booklets explaining army expectations were distributed to departing service members.
Two decrees of divorce were granted in district court yesterday by Judge Siegers. The action reflects ongoing marital dissolution proceedings and final judgments entered in the district court docket.
Questionnaires are mailed this week to all registered youths in Washington County who are 18 and 19. Congress recently allowed their induction and now they must answer forms like older registrants. At registration there were 353 boys of this age. 62 enlisted and 20 inducted at age 20. After returning questionnaires they enter the selective service process toward possible induction. Later, other youths turning 18 since July 1 will register under presidential orders.
At 1 45 this morning thirty four county men boarded a bus for Camp Dodge to begin active army service after a week at home following induction on Armistice day. They gathered at the civilian defense office and were later guests of the American Legion before departure. The list includes Richard P. Baker Robert L. Barnett Clifford C. Beaty Harold D. Beaty Donald R. Bishop William A. Burham and others named as part of Group The 84 men left to take up service this morning adjacent to their Armistice day induction.
Katherine Mann 73 former national executive secretary of the P E O society died at a Cedar Rapids rest home after a paralytic stroke two years earlier She was born near Brighton in 1868 and taught in Caldwell Idaho before a career in real estate She is survived by three brothers John Chris Earl and two sisters Mrs M C Stone and Mrs Gary Stone Funeral arrangements are pending via Shermans Funeral Home Washington
Andrew Elmer Kephart 81 died at University hospital Iowa City after a two week illness. Funeral services at 2 pm Friday at L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev. Ivan Riess, burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Surviving are his wife Margaret and children Roy Homer Fred Mabel Benson plus 15 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Judge P. J. Siegers presides over Lois W. Long versus Lester Long and Hesseltine versus Velta Hesseltine lawsuits. The matters proceed with filings and scheduled hearings in the court.
United States forces press on in two major fronts as Guadalcanal fighting begins to clear the way for a northward advance toward Japanese positions. The Pacific victory includes the loss of a battleship, marking a significant axis setback.
The Y's Men club entertained thirteen CPLT class members at a YMCA dinner. Ground school instructors KF S Garrett and Dick Smith attended. Milo Sorden presided as club president with R H McCleery as emcee and Boyd White led group singing. Doris Gray and others sang, Beverly Brown accompanied, and John Yousling played piano. The evening featured stunts by Theodore Brown and Richard A Stewart.
A thick fog blanketed the community this forenoon reducing visibility to about a half block and making highway driving hazardous though no accidents were reported. By noon the fog lifted to bright sun and rising temperatures. Rainfall from Monday night measured 0.48 inches. temperatures remained unusually high, peaking at 69 yesterday and 70 on Monday.
