UPI reports Major Communist forces converging on Phnom Penh under heavy U.S. air strikes. Rockets hit the airport while government tanks move in and intelligence links North Vietnamese units within striking distance, aiming to isolate the city.
Indira Gandhi told Congress leaders she would not object to a foreign group evaluating the crisis if the study is impartial and broad beyond Afghan guerrillas. Reports say Agartala in East Pakistan was shelled, with unclear casualty figures.
In Bangkok a new revolutionary party led by Prime Minister Thanom Kittikachorn suspended the constitution and imposed martial law. Radio Thailand announced the armed forces seized full power an hour earlier and that government, military, and police officials are under the party's control while promising monarchy protection and public calm. Rumors of a coup had circulated in the afternoon as police in Bangkok were placed on alert.
One month after a string of mid October killings, investigators report no solid clues or suspects in the deaths of Karen Streed 21 Cedar Rapids and Estelle Reubner 78 Muscatine while five Bureau of Investigation agents press on.
A traffic accident on East Third Street near North Fourth Avenue shortly after 1 p.m. injured two Washington youths, with minor cuts reported for Larry Laws and Tim Morrison. Laws drove west on East Third. his car was struck by Janice Clark’s vehicle headed south on Fourth Avenue.
Favors betting DES MOINES (UPI) Former Democratic legislator James Lynch of Redfield urged support for pari mutuel betting on horse racing in Iowa and legalized bingo. Lynch, running for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, argued the state could benefit from the wagering system.
Tonight rain in most sections with light snow possible in the extreme northwest. Lows range from about 35 in the northwest to near 50 in the southeast. Thursday turns cooler with rain likely statewide, highs 40 to 45 in the northwest and around 60 in the southeast.
Washington officials report the Pay Board again debates how far to allow retroactive pay raises blocked by the August freeze. The 15 member panel weighs labor pressure for teacher salaries and other negotiated increases while keeping a general 5.5 percent guideline and considering selective exceptions amid ongoing economic indicators.
In a district court decree Harold J. Fleck upheld the city of Washington and Crane Co contention that the county assessor cannot value the Crane property beyond 80 percent completion. The ruling limits assessor authority to buildings and machinery past a set date and binds assessments until next real estate cycle.
Iowa reports an $74.5 million net sales for the year ending June 30 with a $21.9 million net profit, the sixth consecutive year of record profits. Four million gallons sold, wine up 28 percent, self serve stores praised, as 199 stores operated statewide and profits total over $318 million since 1934. Local area gains include Washington, Mt. Pleasant, Fairfield, Sigourney, and Wapello.
Eddie Collins sought to thank Sgt Gene Statile with 170 pounds of prime beef, but amid Knapp Commission scrutiny Statile declined the gift. The NYPD officer suggested giving it to a children's home on Staten Island instead. Collins said he would reconsider.
