Rock Island 80 mph crash injures 171 passengers
A Rock Island train struck a road grader near Des Moines injuring 77 seriously and 44 more hospitalizing. The diesel from Houston to Minneapolis plowed into the grader at a blind crossing, with 8 passenger cars and 3 baggage cars. One road grader driver lost a leg. Three Iowa City Men Escape River Capsize Near Riverside
Three young Iowa City men duck hunting on the English River near Riverside capsized their small boat in swift floodwaters. Al Breece clung to a log and then a tree for about two hours before rescue by Riverside residents Wes Prehoda and Don Kirchner and Sheriff Charles Snyder. Bill Fulton and David Bollei held to the overturned boat and swam to the south bank, then sought help. The men, none injured, were later taken to the Prehoda farm for dry clothes and planned to recover their gear.
