Washington county taxpayers face about 15 percent higher levies next year with total taxes set at 1,182,005. Current year taxes amount to 1,027,888 all paid, leaving a 154,512 increase. City of Washington adds airport bond tax of 7,208 and higher city expenses boosting local levy by about two mills.
Mrs. E D Miller 64 wife of Dr E D Miller of Wellman died Saturday morning after a long illness at her Wellman home. Born Kalona 1883 she married Miller December 25 1910. Survived by husband daughter Joyce Bush Wellman sons Maurice Diamondale Mich James Russel Wellman and Roger Lt Army Air Corps stationed overseas. Funeral at Wellman Methodist with Rev Robert Pinnell Elder H R Coats and burial in Wellman cemetery.
Rome reports Pietro Castiglia charged that the communists would attempt a coup d etat in Italy and topple de Gasperi. Violence and explosions near Milan, including two soldiers killed, spur fear of a new revolution as mobs sack offices and burn papers nationwide.
Dale Preston Edmondson of Ainsworth and Darlene Shalla of Kalona secured a marriage license at the courthouse this morning. The notice also mentions a sister Mrs Charles Brown of Wellmann, seven grandchildren, and other familial details.
Mrs. Carl Emde aged 54 died from injuries after a Saturday night car crash two miles east of Wellman. In the collision between cars driven by Carl Emde and Charles Judd, three others were injured. Emde's husband suffered a broken knee. Judd had minor injuries. Katherine Davis and Dean Davis sustained injuries. Funeral services for Mrs. Emde will be held at Holy Trinity Church Richmond with burial in Holy Trinity Cemetery.
The Washington Baptist church hosts an associations meeting for all county Baptist men on Thursday night November 20 at 7:30 featuring Fred Schwengel Iowa House member. He speaks on Cooperation Or Else and Davenport Calvary Baptist church leader Schwengel is active in Iowa Baptist lay work. An oyster supper follows the business session.
Fire damaged the Artis Heek home four miles south of Kalona while the family was away at church. The blaze confined to two downstairs rooms with heavy smoke. furniture in those rooms was lost. Myron Salladay reported the fire, and Kalona and Washington fire crews responded.
A Kentucky hospital treated a patient with a fractured knee cap. Mr and Mrs Emde spent Saturday with Mort Emde and family near Lexington. Helen Peiper, born March 3 1893 to Frank and Augusta Peiper on a Richmond area farm, is survived by husband and an only daughter in Washington along with brothers Henry John and Charles and sister Anna of Kalona and Richmond communities.
Legion chili supper scheduled for tomorrow night at 6 30 in city hall legion rooms. All legionaires urged to attend with loans to cover costs. post No 29 funds cover supper as a free event for members. Wendell Baker program chairman has an interesting program for the short meeting to follow and a good turnout is hoped.
Hugo Lenseh, manager of the Cargill soybean plant in Washington, said no damage estimates are available pending statements from Cargill public relations officer Edward J. Grimes, who could not be reached. The fire, confined to the extracting unit, halted no major production and did not affect storage or feed manufacturing areas.

Wayland resident J G Roth died in a Goshen hospital at age 76 after attending his grandson Loren Gingerich’s funeral. He was born in 1871 in Fulton county Ohio and lived in Wayland most of his life. He is survived by his wife Bertha Wyse two daughters a son a sister and brothers. Three children died in infancy. Services set at Sugar Creek church with Rev Simon Gingerich and Rev Willard Leichty. The body will return to Washington for burial.
The statement notes uncertainty about total losses with estimates suggesting figures may fall short of or exceed FLU 000. The processing plant remains enclosed and damage to units will be determined only after an investigation.
Washington crews continue tin can and rubbish collection this week. Two trucks operate under Charman H. F Freshwaters of the garbage committee, aiming to finish the work town wide within days. Cans and materials are to be placed in alley containers or clearly visible spots for truck access.
President Truman asked Congress in an emergency session to grant power to revive selective price ceilings and rationing to curb inflation. He urged swift action on a 10 point anti inflation program while linking foreign aid to domestic price control efforts and warning of possible shortages next year.
The report notes that Congress is not in a true special session but an emergency pre sumption of the first session of the 80th Congress. It explains that the term applies when the president recalls Congress after a regular session ends and before the next convenes, and that no adjournment occurred after the last summer’s work.
Mrs. R. H. Malin died at 9 50 p m Sunday at her South Avenue B home after a lingering illness from a February stroke. Private funeral arrangements are planned with Sherman’s funeral home in charge. Born March 6 1868 near Washington she was married Feb 26 1890 to Richard H. Malin who died in 1919. She lived in Washington and Columbus Junction before returning home. She was a Christian Church member and mother of a late daughter Mrs. B k Newell. Surviving relatives include two grandchildren, one brother James McFerland of Seattle and one sister Mrs Etta O’Loughlin of Washington.
