Leon-Carl Lewis Charged in Lamoni Assault Case
Leon-Carl Lewis aged 53 of amoni is charged with assault with intent to murder after confessing to shooting Mrs. Mary F. Stanley 66 of Lamoni the night of Nov 10. A .22 bullet hit her head as she sat by a window. she remains hospitalized. Eight tear gas shells were used to force Lewis from his home. His mother and sister, living nearby, had been warned and left before the attack.

Four Iowa convicts paroled from penal institutions
Clarence F. Denney, 29, and Max Hampton, 21, Arbet Shellabarger, 26, and Don Kissinger, 25, were paroled from Iowa facilities. Denney served five years for larceny of domestic animals, Hampton ten years for auto theft, Shellabarger five years for poultry theft, Kissinger three years for conspiracy. Denney was convicted in Jefferson County, Shellabarger in Lyon County, Kissinger in Franklin County.

Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a grain filled elevator owned by Farmers Elevator Co. Loss was estimated at 215,000 for the building and 20,000 for the grain. Sloan and nearby towns aided in battling the blaze that began late in the afternoon.

Prairie fire burns 600 acres in Missouri and Louisiana area
A prairie fire scorched about 600 acres between Coatsville Missouri and Moulton Louisiana. Two Wabash railroad crews joined farmers and townspeople to battle the flames, which destroyed a corn field on one farm and haystacks on another.

Factor Pleads Guilty in Mail Fraud Charges
In Cedar Rapids on November 17, John Factor aka Jake the Barber a Chicago investment promoter plead guilty to mail fraud tied to selling worthless whiskey warehouse receipts. The case involved 12 defendants and nearly one million dollars in final transactions while Judge Robert Bell delays sentencing. Three co defendants in Chicago withdrew not guilty pleas. Mrs. Roosevelt returns from war inspection in Great Britain. The president goes to Washington airport to greet his wife this morning. She began her trip on October 21 and will brief women reporters at a press conference tomorrow. Navy scores decisive victory over Japan in major sea clash
United Press dispatch reports the U S navy crushed the Japanese fleet in the largest sea battle of the war. Heavy Japanese losses include one Congo class battleship five cruisers five destroyers and 12 transports sunk. US casualties were two light cruisers and six destroyers sunk with other ships damaged. Admiral Nimitz called it among the war’s decisive actions and predicted Japanese carrier losses could be greater than disclosed.
