The Puritan suffered serious damage after two 200 pound charges of explosive gelatin were detonated against its waterline armor belt at Hampton Roads. The hull below the belt was damaged, water flooded a compartment, and the ship settled. It will be towed to Norfolk for docking and repairs. Officers from Washington observed the test.
