MATTER OF HOURS Rayburn Near Death in Texas Hospital

UPI reports Speaker Sam Rayburn is sinking toward death at 79 with cancer centered in the pancreas. His condition worsened since last Saturday, with periods of rally followed by renewed sinking spells at Risser Hospital in Bonham Texas. Rayburn has served 48 years in the House and 16 years as speaker. His family remains at his side as doctors assess the crisis.

Enrollment Underway In Washington County For Junior Red Cross

Washington County conducts Junior Red Cross enrollment in its schools led by Mrs S Eugene Engel and teacher sponsors including Jesse Linch and Mrs Lawrence Zuehke. Enrollment is by room in elementaries and groups of 30 in high schools with pupils contributing to the chapter fund for enrollment fees and local and national service projects. Local activities include holiday services to shut ins and hospital and home care while the international project sends Gift Boxes to needy children worldwide.

A NASA Bios I for Biological Investigations of Space nose cone carrying eggs and organisms failed to land near recovery forces after a 1200 mile high flight. The capsule veered off course 57 seconds after launch, landing far from the intended Pacific recovery zone off Baja California, making retrieval unlikely.

Ghost Wanted prompts senior class play Friday night

A three act mystery comedy titled Ghost Wanted will be staged in the high school auditorium Friday at 8. The plot centers on a granddaughter seeking voodoo help for her grandmother and features a ghostly arrival, hidden passages, a zombie romance, and laughs under director Daryl Schultz with cast members including Mondia, Neuhart, Kirkpatrick, Schumacher, McClure, Boileau, Trotman, Wilcox, Gilpin, Wilson, Courtney, and Lewin.

Sioux City Father Faces Trial for Beating Step-Daughter

Kenneth Elmer Thompson, 44, is charged with assault and battery in the severe beating of his 15 year old step-daughter. He was held on $100 bond after the incident at their home. Police said the girl was struck with a broken board and a belt buckle, with welts and bruises on her legs. Four children allegedly endured prior beatings.

Anthony Jerry Chapek Dies at 85 in Kalona

Anthony Jerry Chapek, 85, died Tuesday evening in Kalona. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 10 AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond, with Rosary at 6:15 PM Wednesday at Peterseim Funeral Home. Burial in Richmond Cemetery. Survivors include three nieces Sister Mariya of Odanah Wisconsin Mrs Robert Fraizer of San Diego and Mrs Otto Werner of Mason City and two nephews Robert and Paul Chapek of Richmond. He was born January 19 1876 near Richmond to Joseph and Mary Chapek and farmed in Richmond and Riverside areas. He was predeceased by his parents two brothers and a nephew.
