Sets New Altitude Record on Flight That Cost Life
Capt Hawthorne Gray set a world altitude record of 42 470 feet during a recent balloon flight that cost him his life. His deflated balloon was found near Sparta Tennessee. Gray was said to have accidentally cut the oxygen tube keeping him alive. The prior record of 25 424 feet was set by Soring and Berson on June 30 1901.

Debris hampered rescue after Pittsburgh Clay Pot plant blast
Debris of twisted steel hindered body recovery while hundreds with minor injuries were treated. More than 100 remained in hospitals with about 20 to 40 missing or unaccounted.
