Scranton, Nov 15 The anthracite strike commission began hearings with John Mitchell the star witness. He defended miners push for fair wages and detailed union discipline and trade agreement enforceability amid questions on non union workers and case specifics.
Mitchell repeats his opposition to mine work conditions and pay while stressing United Mine Workers of America influence. He cites Wabash arguments on eight hour days and hazard levels, argues a trade pact with the UMWA would bring peace, and notes the union disbursed about 1.5 million dollars to striking and non union workers during the stoppage.
Mitchell testified as the miners’ first witness while Darrow, their chief counsel, questioned him over the ground his earlier statement covered, offering little new insight into the case.

Rev D B Knapp a Wesleyan Methodist minister from Guthrie Center Louisiana and Leota Teaney a 16 year old girl were arrested in Butte Montana after trying to obtain a marriage license in Audubon. The minister faces abduction charges and the girl will be returned to her parents. He has led the Guthrie Center church for a year and is widowed with four children. The girl has been his housekeeper for six months.
